DESIGNS IN DECORATOR WOOD & LAMINATES

"Mitzvah Day is proof positive that it
really is better to give than receive. It is fun,
heartwarming and rewarding. All over Metro
Detroit that morning, it was tikkun olam en
masse! I am so proud of our community. We
take care of our own, but we never forget to
reach out to those around us."

It Doesn't Have To Cost A Fortune...Only Look Like It!

- Rabbi Jennifer Kaluzny of Temple Israel in West Bloomfield

families in need.
Mitzvah Day participants also took
part in a non-perishable food drive,
bringing donations with them as they
reported for duty.
Chairing the event were Micki
Grossman of Farmington Hills and
Stephanie Rosenbaum of Huntington
Woods, who worked with Federation
and JCRC staff for several months orga-
nizing the details involved in a project
of this scope.
Diane Betman of West Bloomfield
and her extended family — kids, aunts,
uncles, grandparents — volunteered at
Grace Centers of Hope in Pontiac.
"I was impressed by what an amaz-
ing organization it was; we were
proud to be part of it',' she said. "Many
Christian families were donating time
on their holiday to give back, too. My
kids learned a lot from it.
"This is our third year as a whole
family. It's a nice tradition and a
good way for us to do a mitzvah

together."
Reflecting back on this first partner-
ship of Muslim and Jewish volunteers
on Mitzvah Day, Todd Mendel, immedi-
ate past JCRC president, described the
venture as "a small step in the right
direction of making amends between
the Jewish and Muslim communities"
and a wonderful way to teach our chil-
dren the importance of helping one
another.
As 12-year-old Sumayyah Ahmed, a
student at Crescent Academy in Canton,
put it: "It was a nice way to spend
Christmas. We had a lot of fun and I
met nice people. I want to come back
next year!"
In 2010, Christmas falls on Shabbat.
Plans will be made to find a suitable
alternate day. Ti
