Pope Pius XII Sainthood?
Vatican City/JTA
Controversial
World War II Pope Pius XII moved
one step closer to sainthood.
The current pope, Benedict XVI,
advanced the sainthood of Pius and
the popular Pope John Paul II by
endorsing their "heroic virtues."
Jews and other critics have
accused Pius of having turned a
blind eye to Jewish suffering in
World War II. Benedict has said that
Pius worked secretly and silently to
help save Jews, according to the New

York Times.
Another Vatican committee must
ascertain that miracles attributed to
them actually occurred before the
two popes can be made saints.
"One day after the Nazi death
camp at Auschwitz is desecrated,
Holocaust survivors are shaken
by the profoundly insensitive and
thoughtless Vatican announcement
advancing wartime Pope Pius XII
on the path to sainthood," said a
statement issued by the American
Gathering of Holocaust Survivors
and their Descendants. "Pairing
the announcement on Pius — who
remained publicly silent during the
Holocaust — with that on John Paul
II, himself a victim of the Nazis, is a
particularly disturbing and callous
act."
American Jewish Committee
Executive Director David Harris
said that while the Vatican should
determine its saints, "the Church's
repeated insistence that it seeks
mutually respectful ties with the
Jewish community also means tak-
ing our sensitivities into account on
the Holocaust era."
AJC has maintained that no steps
should be taken toward the beatifi-
cation of Pius XII until the Vatican's
secret archives on the World War
II period are opened for objective
scrutiny by scholars.

Israel Harvested Organs

Israel admitted to
Jerusalem/JTA
harvesting organs from dead bodies
in the 1990s. The admission came
after the release of a 2000 inter-
view with Dr. Yehuda Hiss, who was
the head of Israel's L. Greenberg
Forensic Institute in Abu Kabir, the
Associated Press reported.
Hiss told an American academic
in the interview, parts of which were
broadcast on Israel's Channel 2,
that the institute used corneas from
bodies, including Israeli soldiers,
Palestinians and foreign workers.

Channel 2's report said that corneas,
heart valves, skin and bones were
used from the corpses without fami-
lies' permission.
The scholar released the inter-
view following a report in a Swedish
newspaper that Israel was harvest-
ing the organs of Palestinians killed
by Israeli soldiers, an accusation
that Israeli officials have denied, AP
reported.
The Israel Defense Forces con-
firmed to Channel 2 that the organs
were used, but stressed that the
practice stopped a decade ago.

Auschwitz Security
Warsaw/JTA
Poland's culture
ministry has set aside money to
improve security at the Auschwitz
memorial site. Culture Minister
Bogdan Zdrojewski set aside about
$137,000 on Dec. 23 to improve
security at the site.
The move comes days after the
original "Arbeit Macht Frei" sign
stolen from the front gate of the con-
centration camp was found, cut into
three pieces and ready to be smug-
gled out of the country. The guards
on duty the night that the sign was
stolen have been suspended, accord-
ing to reports.
Five men, aged 20 to 39, were
arrested in the theft. The motive
appears to be financial, though anti-
Semitism has not been ruled out.

The Answer
As a longtime Arab propagandist,
Moussa, speaking with report-
ers, ignored concerns about Iran's
nuclear program and its bellicose
threats and, instead, directed their
attention to purported dangers
posed by Israel.
