Right On About Terrorists
How refreshing to have read your out-.
standing editorial opinion "Terrorists
Are Terrorists!" (Dec. 3, page 30). You
hit the nail on the head on all points,
which hopefully will wake up others in
our community.
In solving any problem, the first
thing you have to do is to identify the
problem and call it what it is. Being
politically correct will not eliminate
future Ft. Hoods or other horrific ter-
rorists acts from occurring. However,
calling a terrorist a terrorist is a good
first step.

History Repeated
Thanks so much for your coverage of
Detroit Public Television's new docu-
mentary Detroit Remember When: The
Jewish Community. From the number
of people who mentioned to us seeing
the story ("Close Up And Personal:'
Dec. 3, page 16) and the advertise-
ment, we were reminded what a trust-
ed and well-read medium your paper
is in Detroit's Jewish community.
The results of the Dec. 9 broadcast
were so outstanding that we re-showed
it on Saturday, Dec. 19, on Channel 56,
including the studio segments with our
guests Arnold Collens and Gerald Cook
representing our partnership with the
Jewish Historical Society of Michigan,
filmmakers Sue Marx and Allyson
Rockwell and author Irwin J. Cohen.
Thanks again for helping Detroit
Public TV connect with the community.

Refocus Our Priorities
Robert Sklar's Editor's Letter "Our
Imperiled Schools" (Dec. 17, page
5) hits the nail on the head: In the
convenience of our homes, we do not
want to see what is happening in our
schools in America.
Saudi money allowed 60 mil-
lion books to be sent to our public
libraries, frequently including soft
pro-Palestinian, pro-Arab, pro-Islam
propaganda. Our Jewish life, I find,
is frequently focused on the past: the
Holocaust. We must focus now on the
future of our children.
Just watch what happens in our
colleges and universities where nice,
politically correct people allow Muslim
student organizations to change cam-
pus life by getting special privileges
via allowing lecturers and professors
with their political bias a stage. Such
groups aggressively approach boards
of trustees to boycott Israeli academia.
StandWithUs, an international Israel
educational and advocacy organiza-
tion, provides learning material to stu-
dents, lecturers and fellowships. It is,
however, imperative that Jewish educa-
tion, Hebrew Bible and Jewish history
start at home — every Jewish home.
Our Jewish schools have to be dras-
tically changed to accommodate to
this new reality.
To achieve these goals our Jewish
community has to raise funds, a lot
of funds, and consolidate our efforts
under strong leadership.

Confront Textbook Bias
Thank you to Robert Sklar for writing
in his Editor's Letter about the inaccu-
racies and bias found in public school
textbooks' sections on religion and the
Middle East ("Our Imperiled Schools:'
Dec. 17, page 5). This is a serious
problem and affects us locally, too.
The Michigan chapter of the
StandWithUs has been leading the
effort here by attending many state-
wide public and charter school teach-
ers' conferences and giving accurate
resources to educators.
In addition, the chapter is now
working with the Metro Detroit JCRC
to examine a major textbook, which
is being marketed to local school dis-
tricts, and to utilize the resources of
the San Francisco JCRC's Institute for
Curriculum Services.
But as the Editor's Letter states,
Jewish parents have an important role
to play as well. They must be famil-
iar with the textbooks used in their
schools and the Web sites to which
children are directed.

Jewish Community Relations Council
of Metropolitan Detroit
Bloomfield Township
