Discomfort has been minimized with the diminution of heavy forces. More
efficient and lighter forces with archwires made of new materials have brought
many smiles to orthodontic patients. Some wires are temperature sensitive, so
patients have more control as to the level of comfort and speed at which the
teeth move. Warm foods and mouth ternperatures activate these wires, while a
cold drink alleviates discomfort.

The actual braces have become smaller, and therefore are less noticeable and
easier to keep clean. Clear braces have been improved to resist stain and
are almost invisible. Certain types of high technology braces, like DAMON
appliances, have a door mechanism that allows treatment to proceed more
quickly and comfortably than before. With traditional braces, fun and creativity
can be brought into the picture as patients can now elect to utilize colored bands.
