e treasure our teachers
and all of our staff,' said
Teri Giannetti, princi-
pal of Akiva Hebrew Day School.
"And what better time of year than
Chanukah to thank them for their
dedication and tireless commitment
to the welfare of our students?"
On Dec. 14, Akiva's faculty and
staff were feted in "Akiva's Italian
Bistro" (Palman Chapel), where they
were escorted to their seats by the
Southfield school's administrators,
who were formally attired in tuxedos
and tasteful evening wear.
Dinner music was provided by vio-
linist Gloria Gardin, who entertained
the crowd with such "Italian" classics
as "I Have a Little Dreidel" and "Oh,
Chanukah." The decor featured an
enormous treasure chest overflowing
with jewels and gold doubloons — of
the chocolate variety.
Dinner, which was prepared in
Akiva's kitchen by the staff of Cafe
Cortina in Farmington Hills, included
antipasto, a pasta course and an
entree of salmon, prepared in the
Mediterranean style, with green
beans. Dessert was "Teri's Tiramisu,"
a calorific concoction whose main
ingredients included whipped cream,
mascarpone cheese and a hint of
kosher Marsala wine.
The program opened with greetings
from Education Director Chaye Kohl,
who acknowledged Akiva's hardwork-
ing staff as well as her administrative
colleagues who — along with the
Akiva PTA and an anonymous donor
— sponsored the event, giving gen-
erously of their time and financial
resources.
Parent volunteers covered the teach-
ers' classes so teachers were able to
enjoy an extended lunch period.
Throughout the meal, raffles were
drawn. The prizes included an assort-
ment of gift certificates, and three
I-Tune cards — courtesy of the anon-
ymous donor — with a total value
of $200. The most highly "treasured"
prize was an hour of class coverage,
donated by each member of Akiva's
administrative staff. The audience was
delighted when Executive Director
Sidney Katz's hour was won by Rabbi
Eliezer Cohen — who had been Katz's
teacher "back in the day."
Time waits for no one and the
Bistro guests resumed their duties at
the end of the hour — enriched by
gold doubloons, a gourmet meal and
warm memories.
