Fiddler restaurant continues to offer a choice of its top-10 entrees for $10.

oming to the year's end of its
11th anniversary might have
been motivation for the super
dining deal being held over into 2010,
but truth be told, the soft economy has
much to do with why Fiddler Russian and
International Restaurant, on the north end
of West Bloomfield Plaza, Orchard Lake
Road south of 15 Mile, is doing this.
- "It seems to be helping a lot of people
says owner Gary Zolot, whose 10 For
10 offering is drawing large numbers,
especially on Fridays and Saturdays with
both the dining room and banquet room
packed to capacity.
The 10 For 10 dinner specials are of its
most popular entrees ... all at $10 ... with
no downsizing of portions ... Included
are choice of chicken cutlets, stuffed cab-
bage rolls (regular and vegetarian), stuffed
peppers, cheese blintzes, meat blintzes,
short ribs, Moscow fish and others, plus
the popular Ukrainian Borscht or salad

a young (21-year-old) Mark
Fidrych for lunch to Mitch's
Tavern on Cass-Elizabeth Road
in Waterford. It was 1976 and
the youthful and wonderful
pitcher for the Detroit Tigers,
was trying hard to be sophis-
ticated. The waitress brought
over the wine menu and asked
if he wanted anything special
to drink. Mark took it and
pretended to be studying it.
He then looked up and told
the waitress, 'Please bring us a bottle of
that Leafer Milk. As she walked away
chuckling at his mispronunciation of the
Liebfraumilch selection, Mark added, And
a regular glass of milk, too!'
"I remember taking world heavyweight
champion, James Toney, whom I managed
at the time, and his sparring partners to
the Rikshaw Inn for dinner on Orchard
Lake Road [in West Bloomfield] in 1991.
David Lum, the owner, told everyone at
our table to try the Szechuan Chicken.
James liked his food spicy so trying hard
to be macho, he dumped extra hot sauce
on the chicken. The first bite went down
fine and the second only caused a small
line of sweat on his upper lip. By the third
bite, though, he started to turn colors.
Water poured out of his skull and he
grabbed for his water, pouring half on his
head and drinking the rest. The other guys
cracked up as he ripped open his shirt and
started dropping ice cubes down his chest
and back. He never ordered that dish
again!" ... Jackie Kallen.
Jackie is now working on her memoir,
which is tentatively titled Undefeated, with

hopes of finishing it within a few months
... Now living in California, Jackie's pres-
ent stable of boxers includes two unde-
feated young gents, Michael Dallas and
Karim Mayfield ... both of whom she is
expecting big things from.
NO SLEEPING ON the job by David
and Hedy Blatt, executive director and
director of community relations husband-
and-wife team heading the Michigan
Jewish Sports Foundation and Michigan
Jewish Sports Hall of Fame ... But oth-
ers may have to put toothpicks in their
eyelids sometime this winter ... Instead
of resting on their laurels with success-
ful Hank Greenberg Golf Invitational
and Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame events, David and Hedy are taking
fundraising to an even further dimen-
sion ... On their fertile-minded drawing
boards now for the first time are a Movie
Marathon where, for one ticket, folks will
be able to stay up all night watching as
many films as they want at the 12-screen
Emagine Theater in Novi ... Also a First
Annual Indoor Walkathon.
