Switzerland, Turkey and the United
Kingdom.
Other AJC participants included
Executive Director, Kari Alterman,
Robert Bick, Howard Brown, Jeff
Camiener, Alicia Chandler, Ethan
Davidson, Gina Esit Epardo, Fred
Frank, Jonathan Frank, Kenneth C.
Gold, Robert Labe, Keith Lublin,
Todd Mendel, Nanci Rands, Dr. Shari
Rogers, Barbara Rom, Eli Saulson
and Sheri Schiff.
The diplomatic marathon culmi-
nated with a presentation and book
signing at the Holocaust Memorial
Center in Farmington Hills, featur-
ing Elizabeth Bettina, author of It
Happened in Italy. The 150 attendees
heard firsthand the story of how
thousands of interned Jews across
Europe found sanctuary in the
unlikeliest of places in Italy dur-
ing World War II — with Catholic
inhabitants of small Italian towns.
Holocaust survivor and New York
resident, Ursula Korn-Selig, also
participated in the presentation. She
is featured prominently in the book
and has accompanied Bettina back
to Italy and received an audience
with the Pope.
Susan Langnas Feber of West
Bloomfield, whose late father's story
mirrors those told in the book,
introduced the speakers: "Elizabeth's
research brings to light what can
happen when humanity and com-
passion win out over fear and com-
placency. The Italian people should
be commended for their efforts to
save their Jewish brethren."
The event was opened with a
moving message from Msgr. Patrick
Halfpenny of St. Paul's on the Lake
Catholic Church in Gross Pointe
Farms. He highlighted the con-
nections between the Jewish and
Catholic communities and the need
to work together to build bridges of
understanding.
AJC Detroit President Jonathan B.
Frank articulated AJC's long history
of cooperation with the Catholic
Church, including AJC's close con-
nection to the Vatican, with an
office in Rome. In 2006, AJC was the
first American Jewish organization
to receive an audience with Pope
Benedict XVI.
The event was co-sponsored by
the Italian Consulate in Detroit, the
Archdiocese of Detroit, the Jewish
Community Center of Metropolitan
Detroit and the Holocaust Memorial
Center.

candle is featured as the shamash used
to light the others.
The rendition of the synagogue's
architecture was created by artist
Reuven Masel and includes eight other
American synagogues.
"The Synagogues of America"
chanukiah (Chanukah menorah) is
absolutely beautiful and we at Shaarey
Zedek are so honored to be recognized
as a landmark American synagogue,'
said Shaarey Zedek Rabbi Joseph H.
Krakoff.
"Our place as the shamash on this
commemorative menorah is something
we are humbled by and that we will
cherish each and every time we say the
Chanukah blessings:'
Sales of the chanukiah are spon-
sored by the Morris and Beverly Baker
