Paid Internships

participation by providing airfare,
lodging, food, ski equipment, volun-
teer time and considerable support.
In addition to the remarkable
efforts of Rabbi Mintz and the
Aspen Chabad community, other
people have been instrumental in
ensuring that the event is positive.
Rabbi Mintz coordinates with Rabbi
Menachem Kutner, director of activ-
ities for the Chabad Terror Victims
Project in Israel, who identifies and
organizes the group that travels to
Aspen. Some family members also
attend the adaptive ski clinic.
According to Rabbi Kutner, the
Chabad Terror Victims Project sup-
ports approximately 2,800 families
of terror victims throughout Israel
in order to rebuild shattered lives.
Houston Cowan, CEO and co-
founder of Challenge Aspen, a 501c3
organization, provides a therapeutic
experience for the Israelis, many of
whom wear prosthetic limbs. Some
ski standing up and some use sit
skis.
The soldiers receive instruction
from certified Challenge Aspen
ski instructors who are experts in
teaching adaptive skiing techniques.
Challenge Aspen also provides the
adaptive equipment.
One Israeli soldier, Kfir Levy,
spread his wings at Snowmass in
2009. Kfir was hit in the face in
2002 by a rocket-propelled gre-
nade designed to destroy armored
vehicles. Kfir has had at least 130
surgeries, is blind in one eye, has
severe hearing loss and is paralyzed
on one side. It is amazing that he
even survived and quite remarkable
to find him skiing down the slopes
of Snowmass.
In 2010, a new group of disabled
Israeli soldiers will come to Aspen/
Snowmass with the knowledge that
so many people have worked on
their behalf to provide an experi-
ence that nourishes the soul as well
as challenges one's physical abili-
ties.
