M
att Felsenfeld made big
news in 2008.
The West Bloomfield
teen shot 1-under-par 71-72 —143
at Tam-O-Shanter and Knollwood
country clubs in the JCC Maccabi
Games locally, becoming the first
golfer in Maccabi Games history to
win a gold medal with a below-par
score. A few weeks later, Felsenfeld,
then 16, became the youngest winner
of the Tam-O-Shanter club champion-
ship.
Felsenfeld is now in his third year at
the prestigious David Leadbetter Golf
Academy in Bradenton, Fla., but he's
headed back to the Great Lakes state.
The 17-year-old has signed a
national letter of intent to play golf
at the University of Michigan. He
received a partial scholarship. "It's
time to come home Felsenfeld said.
And it's time for another Felsenfeld
to attend U-M. Matt's parents, Bob
Felsenfeld and Brenda Weingarten,
are graduates, and so is his brother
Josh Felsenfeld.
A near 4.0 grade point aver-
age student at Pendleton School in
Bradenton, Felsenfeld plans to apply
for admission to U-M's Ross School of
Business after his freshman year.
"I'd like to go into marketing or
business administration, something I
can tie into my golf career:' he said.
Yes, becoming a pro on the PGA
Tour is Felsenfeld's dream.
He's well on his way to making his
dream come true. A nationally ranked
junior player, Felsenfeld is ranked the No.
2 junior in Michigan by National Junior
Golf Scorecard and Golfweek magazine.
He's collected 13 top-10 finishes in
junior tournaments in 2008 and 2009,
including a fifth-place showing in the
2009 Michigan Junior State Amateur
Championship.
Felsenfeld attended Detroit Country
Day School in Beverly Hills as a high
school freshman. His 21st-place fin-
ish in the Division 3 state boys golf
tournament helped Country Day place
fourth in the team standings.
Even though he had some misgiv-
ings at first, Felsenfeld is glad he
made the difficult decision to leave
home and head south to the Ledbetter
Academy, which provides boarding
and an academic program in addition
to rigorous golf instruction.
Matt Felsenfeld: Ann Arbor bound
"It was a tough decision, but if I
was going to compete against the best
players in the world, I needed to play
golf year-round;' the 6-foot-2, 160-
pounder said. "I'll admit I was home-
sick my first year, and I've given up a
lot of my social life, but the experience
has been worth it."
Heartfelt
300 Game
Twenty-one months
after undergoing
quadruple-bypass
heart surgery,
Howard Waxer can
boast
about a differ-
Howard Waxer
ent number.
He bowled his second career 300
game Nov. 20 while competing in the
Westside Merchants League at Airway
Lanes in Waterford.
Waxer shot 300-224-237 — 761.
He rolled his first perfect game Dec.
16, 2002, in the Brotherhood-Eddie
Jacobson B'nai B'rith League at
Country Lanes in Farmington Hills.
That series was 214-300-223 —737.
Even though his 300 games are
separated by nearly seven years, Waxer
thought lightning could strike twice.
"I came close in 2003 when I
bowled a 299 while subbing in the
Downtown-Fox B'nai B'rith League
(at Drakeshire Lanes in Farmington
Hills), so I was confident I could get
another 300:' he said.
The 61-year-old Farmington Hills
resident is a longtime B'nai B'rith
bowler. He's a board member of the
International B'nai B'rith Bowling
Association and a past president of
the Metropolitan Detroit B'nai B'rith
Bowling Association.
Waxer bowled for the U.S. in the
World Maccabiah Games in 2001 and
2005 in Israel and in the Pan American
Maccabiah Games in 2003 in Chile.
