YOUR COMEBACK
STARTS HERE.

Maybe you're not where you think you
should be. Maybe you're ready for
something different. Maybe you're
ready to do something about it.

There's no better place to begin than
Oakland Community College this winter.
With programs in 160 high-demand
fields, including Health Care, Computer
Science, and Robotics, or short-term
programs geared toward immediate
employment, such as Heating & Cooling
or Dental Assisting, OCC is here for you.

If you're planning to go on for a four-
year degree, you can do your first two
years at OCC for 1/4 of the cost of a
state university — just $60.10 per credit
hour for Oakland County residents.
And there's a full range of financial
aid opportunities available, including
scholarships, grants, loans and
work-study programs.

With campuses in Auburn Hills,
Farmington Hills, Royal Oak, Southfield

OCC campus near you. We also offer
many of our classes at night, for students
who work during the day.

Enroll now for Winter classes. Touch*Tone
and Web registration now through
January 8. Final walk-in registration
at all campuses is January 6, 7 and 8.
Classes begin Monday, January 11.

Teen Pioneers
I write regarding Frankel Jewish
Academy student Emily Goodman's
article "USY Returns" (IN Teen2Teen,
Nov. 19, page 2). Emily hits the nail
on the head when she writes that
"MCUSY has already positively
affected local teens."
With many bemoaning the fact
that Jewish young adults are avoid-
ing a return to Metro Detroit for
other Jewish communities, the
energy of these young people will
change this unfortunate trend
in the future. The Jewish teens
in the Motor City USY (United
Synagogue Youth) group are mak-
ing a difference in our community
through their activities — social
action initiatives, educational pro-
gramming and social endeavors.
Like teens in other local Jewish
youth groups, they are forging last-
ing friendships with other Detroit-
area high school students. Hope-
fully, following college or graduate
school, they will opt to return to
this community to reunite with
their friends from USY.
As a USY alumnus, I am excited
to witness rejuvenation in the
program locally. With the able guid-
ance of Jodi Gross (ATID's liaison
to youth programming) and Vadim
Avshalumov (MCUSY adviser),
these teens are serving as the pio-
neers for a Jewish renaissance in
the local Conservative Jewish com-
munity. They truly will affect our
Jewish community in positive ways.

Racist Cartoon?
The Dry Bones cartoon that
appeared on Nov.26 (page 53) seems
to take portraying President Obama
as overtly simian a bit too far. I
understand that the JN uses the dry-
bonesblog.com cartoons often, but I
wish you would have chosen not to
print this particular comic strip.
It is borderline racist and
seems to suggest that our presi-
dent and the U.S. Congress are
not doing a great deal to prevent
Islamist extremism from harming
Americans or American interests.
I happen to know for a fact that
Congress and the Obama admin-
istration are doing a great deal
in terms of preventing Iran from
gaining nuclear weapons.
And I applaud the efforts of our
elected officials like Congressman
Gary Peters, D-Bloomfield
Township, and Senator Carl Levin,
D-Mich., who have continu-
ously worked hard to protect both
American and Israeli interests.
