A senior Hamas source told the London- based Arabic newspaper al Hayat last Friday that a proposed deal to release Shalit in exchange for Israeli-held Palestinian pris- oners had hit three obstacles: Israel's refusal to release 50 of the 450 prisoners requested for release by Hamas; Israel's refusal to include Israeli-Arab prisoners in the deal; and Israel's insistence on deporting 130 of the prisoners. A German mediator has been relating negotiation points between Gaza and Israel, according to al-Hayat. Hamas reportedly will not make a deal without the release of 15 specific prisoners, including West Bank Fatah leader Marwan Barghouti; Ahmed Saadat, secretary-general of the Popular Resistance for the Liberation of Palestine; and 10 leaders of Hamas' mili- tary wing, according to the Saudi Arabia newspaper al Watan. Shalit, now 23, was kidnapped in June 2006 by llamas operatives near the Gaza border and has been held in Gaza ever since, according to reports. In October, Hamas released a video of a healthy-looking Shalit holding up a Palestinian newspaper bearing a September 2009 masthead. Meanwhile, a llamas official told Israel Radio Sunday that an al Hayat report say- ing that French doctors had traveled to Gaza last week to examine Shalit was false. - Berkley High School offers 21 Advanced Placement (AP) courses and ten Honors classes. The Palestinian family of 12, which is now homeless, filed a com- plaint with the Civil Administration. Netanyahu at the start of Sunday's weekly Cabinet meeting said the decision to estab- lish a 10-month freeze on construction in West Bank settlements "has to do with the heart of the homeland of the Jewish people. It has to do with settlers, Israelis who are our brothers; they are part of us and we are part of them. Netanyahu stressed that the freeze "is a one-time and temporary decision, not a freeze of unlimited and infinite duration:' Salita, who sported a Star of David on his trunks, also took a standing-eight count. Salita, an Orthodox Jew, studies at a Chabad yeshivah in Brooklyn, N.Y. Salita, 27, came in as a heavy underdog despite a 30-0-1 record and being the No. 1 contender for the crown. He was knocked down 10 seconds into the fight, took the eight count after another shot, then was sent to the canvas again before referee Luis Pabon of Puerto Rico stepped in after 76 seconds. Embassy Waiver Signed Washington/JTA President Obama has extended a waiver for an additional six months delaying the move of the U.S. Embassy to Jerusalem. It is the second time Obama has extended the waiver during his term and follows in the footsteps of predecessors Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, who also extended the waiver every six months since the law was adopted in 1995 call- ing for the move of the embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem. Presidents are permitted to delay the move on national security grounds. Some Jewish groups have pushed for the United States to move the embassy as a way to bolster Israeli claims to the city. Those favoring the use of the waiver say that such a step would anger the Arab world and put the United States in the position of taking sides on an issue that should be settled in peace talks. — Answering Israel's Critics The Charge During last month's annual (since 1977) two-day Israel-bashing event at the United Nations — the "Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People" — Palestinian representative Riyad Mansour said Israel "continues to deny the rights of the Palestinian people, breaching international humanitarian and human rights law." The Answer Israel's U.N. representative Dr. Gabriela Shalev answered that Israel wants peace, will talk peace anywhere and anytime without pre-conditions, and will take "painful and effective" steps toward that end, such as the recently announced settlement construction freeze. - Allan Gale, Jewish Community Relations Council of Metropolitan Detroit © Jewish Renaissance Media Dec. 10, 2009
