More than 200 students, faculty and community members filled the
ballroom at EMU's Student Center.

University in Detroit said. "It is not
a perfect God that I personally can
believe in."
The speakers cited Scripture, writ-
ings from famed Holocaust survi-
vors and academic sources through-
out their 90-minute dialogue, which
was moderated by EMU English
Professor Martin Shichtman. They
rarely disagreed, despite coming
from different religious perspectives
and the disciplines of academia and
theology, which can often clash.
Both said that humanity has not
fully recovered in the six decades
since concentration camps were lib-
erated, and expressed a shared frus-
tration that atrocities against targeted
groups of people are still being com-
mitted globally on a large scale.

Big Questions
As the event started, building staff
were summoned to bring out more
chairs as students of all races and
area residents of all ages lined the
walls of the EMU Student Center's
ballroom.
Though many in the audience said
they expected a more fiery debate on
a topic rife for controversy, few left
disappointed.
"It was a very interesting discus-
sion and the huge turnout shows
there is a lot of curiosity and
that people want to see this topic
explored," said A.J. Weinhaus, an
EMU freshman from Grosse Pointe.
Freshman Rachel Orbach of
Huntington Woods was drawn to
the event because her relatives sur-

vived the Buchenwald concentra-
tion camp. She also hopes to teach
the Holocaust as a social studies
instructor after graduation.
Given her background, Orbach
thought she was prepared for the
subject matter, but did not expect
the event to have such an introspec-
tive effect.
"If God didn't survive the
Holocaust, then why do I wear a
Jewish star around my neck every
day? Why do the [seminary] stu-
dents I walk past on a daily basis
deny themselves worldly pleasures?"
the Huntington Woods native said.
"I guess everyone changed after the
Holocaust, and if we are created in
God's image, as some believe, then
why shouldn't He [change]?"
Neil Katz of Bloomfield Hills said
that after years of exploring the
Holocaust while among other Jews,
he was intrigued to hear a non-
Jewish perspective. He also won-
dered whether people of other faiths
believed God was present while so
many innocent people suffered.
"You're dealing with theology and
can't really expect a blunt answer,"
the EMU senior said. "But it was
very interesting to hear how the
mindset shifted after the Holocaust
from the contemporary view of
an all-powerful God that involved
Himself in everything, to One that
lets people do as they will." fl
