Missing Photo?
The generous donors are at it again.
The Bookstock volunteers going
through thousands of donated volumes
in preparation for next April's used book
and media sale have again discovered
family photographs in between the pages.
The very old photo at right was found
while books were being sorted last
month. There is no identification or writ-
ing of any kind on the front or back of the
picture. If you know who the photograph
belongs to, contact Alan Hitsky, (248)
351-5148 or ahitslcy@thejewishnews.com .

The mystery woman
Iranian Human
Rights Pushed
Citing a long and grim
list of human rights
abuses by the govern-
ment of the Islamic
Republic of Iran, Sen.
Carl Levin, D-Mich.,
Sen. Levin
said he introduced a
U.S. Senate resolution condemning that
country's human rights record.
He called for an immediate release
of those wrongfully imprisoned and
urged restoration of meaningful human
rights for all of Iran's citizens. Sens. John
McCain, R-Ariz., Robert Casey, D-Pa.,
Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., Bob Corker, R-
Tenn., Joe Lieberman, I-Conn., and Bill
Nelson, R-Fla., joined Levin in sponsor-
ing the bipartisan sense of the Senate
resolution (S. Res. 355), which passed on
Nov. 19.
"The Iranian government must stop
state-sanctioned violence against its own
citizens and live up to its professed ideals
and international commitments to pro-
tect the human rights of its citizens and
others," Levin said.
Some of the human rights violations
Iran perpetrates on its citizens include:
torture and cruel and inhuman treat-
ment such as flogging and amputations; a
high incidence of executions including of
juveniles; stoning as a method of execu-
tion; violent repression of women; human
rights violations of religious and ethnic
minorities; serious restrictions of freedom
of peaceful assembly; and severe limita-
tions on freedom of religion and belief
American citizens also are targets of
the Iranian regime. U.S. citizen Robert
Levinson has been missing in Iran since
2007 during which time the Iranian
regime has denied having any informa-
tion on his whereabouts. Reza Taghavi, a
71-year old Iranian-American, has been
imprisoned without a trial or formal
charges since 2008. The Iranian govern-
ment jailed Iranian-American journalist
Roxana Saberi in January and charged
and convicted her of espionage after a
one-hour show trial before releasing her
in May.

"Ten years ago, our group was only 10 years
old — still a pretty young organization. Now,
we have doubled our lifespan and we feel very
well grounded. We have become more known
locally; and fewer west-siders raise their eye-
brows and comment that 'Grosse Pointe' and
`Jews' in the same sentence is an oxymoron."
