T hree Michigan student lead- ers have been designated Emerson Fellows, a campus initiative entering its third year from StandWithUs, the nonprofit, interna- tional Israel education organization. They are: Jackie Swartz, Michigan State University; Benjamin Kaminsky, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor and Foster Davis, University of Michigan-Flint. The annual Fellowship selects and trains students from campuses across America and Canada to run events that teach about Israel; 39 student leaders from 39 campuses have been hired for the 2009-10 school year. It is funded by philanthropists Rita and Steve Emerson.(www.emersonfellow- ship.com ). Majoring in social work at MSU, Schwartz is president of the Israeli Culture Club, TIP-C: Team Israel Programming Committee. In October, she organized a movie night, showing Yossi and Jagger and is planning Israel Fest, showcasing Israel beyond the conflict. Kaminsky is majoring in finance and is vice president of the Tamid Israel Investment Group at the University of Michigan. He "hopes to better educate people about the realities in the Middle East, and create support for Israeli poli- cies." His first project was a screening of The Forgotten Refugees about the mass expulsion of Jews from Arab countries and Iran when the State of Israel was created in 1948. Also, Avi Jorisch will speak about his experi- ences embedded with Hezbollah and international terror financing. University of Michigan-Flint sociol- ogy graduate student Foster Davis is president of the newly reinstated Jewish Student Union. "The goal of my events is to further educate the students and foster exigent dialogue,' he said. He is planning an Israel 101 presentation; a session on the "History of Israel Through Maps" by StandWithUs education-research director Roberta Seid, Ph.D., and an address by Israeli Sgt. Benjamin Anthony, "Our Soldiers Speak," who will relay his experiences from the battlefield. The students began by attending an August conference in Los Angeles geared towards training them as StandWithUs Emerson Fellows. They learned skills and facts to help them clarify Israel's image and combat anti- Israel rhetoric and stereotypes. Throughout the year, the Fellows will build relationships with their cam- pus groups and individuals to create informative, balanced and educational events. They will report back to SWU campus staff to evaluate program effec- tiveness and network among them- selves to ensure consistency. SWU Emerson Fellows receive a stipend. They are eligible to join the StandWithUs Taglit Birthright Israel trip or be chosen to intern at the StandWithUs office in Israel in the summer of 2010. More than 120 candidates applied for and were interviewed for this year's Fellowship. StandWithUs, an international, non- profit Israel education organization, hosts speakers and conferences, offers W eb site resources and creates bro- chures and materials about Israel that are distributed globally (www.standwi- thus.com ). Based in Los Angeles, the organization has offices across the U.S. and in Israel and the United Kingdom. SWU was founded in 2001 in response to the public's need and desire for more information about the Arab-Israeli conflict. StandWithUsCampus helps college students challenge anti-Israel bias.
