RUBINSTEIN WEISS,
87, of West Bloomfield
died Nov. 26, 2009.
Born Oct. 1, 1922, in
Mihalyfalva, Romania,
she was the only mem-
ber of a large extended
Weiss
family to survive the
c. 1970
Holocaust.
She found joy in life
nourishing her friends and family both
with beautifully prepared meals and
tales of her past. She was an avid reader
who, in her younger years, loved travel

MELVIN WINER, 82, of Oak Park, died

Nov. 23, 2009.
He was a tool and die salesman.
Mr. Winer is survived by his wife,
Betty Winer; daughters, Lisa Winer of
Oak Park, Gail Roberts of California;
grandson, Grant Roberts; also survived
by Zoe.

South African Jewish Leader

Mendel Kaplan, 73, a
prominent South African Jewish leader
and philanthropist, has died. He was a
billionaire steel magnate who served as
board chairman of the Jewish Agency for
Israel for nearly a decade,
A champion of Jewish education and
Russian aliyah to Israel, he was chair of



the Jewish Agency,
1987-1995; chair
of Keren Hayesod's
World Board of
Trustees, 1983-1987;
and national chair-
man of the Israel
United Appeal, South
Mendel Kaplan
Africa, 1978-1987.
He established the
Isaac and Jessie Kaplan Centre for Jewish
Studies and Research at the University of
Cape Town and the South African Jewish
Museum, and was one of the first fenders of
the City of David excavation.
"Few, if any, have done as much to build
South African Jewry into the dynamic,
vibrant community it is today,' said the
chairman of the South African Jewish Board
of Deputies, Zev Krengel.
He called Kaplan was "the father of the
South African Jewish community:'
