The Detroit Jewish Book Fair Committee would like to thank the Detroit com- munity for supporting our book fair. By attending our numerous speakers and buying books, you help to ensure that the most sought-after authors will travel to Detroit. With our partnership of more than 100 organizations, this truly is a commu- nitywide event. Without your enthusiastic support for our 70-plus authors and your generosity in your purchases, our book fair could not succeed. The Detroit Jewish Book Fair is the only Jewish book fair in the nation that does not charge for events (other than patron and Film Festival events); and we are thrilled to be able to provide our programming at no cost to the community. Thank you again for choosing the Detroit Jewish Book Fair for your educa- tional and spiritual enrichment. We greatly appreciate it. For the past three years or so, my father has been focusing on the council's administrative work. The hands-on visiting of plants and factories was done by staff rabbis or myself. Therefore, despite this tragedy, we offer the community uninterrupted kosher service. Everyone may feel secure that the products bearing our trademark Shield-K meet the highest demands of the Halachah. The council also has finalized discussions with several well-known rabbis who will be joining the council staff. An announcement to that effect should follow shortly. Ezra Goldman, interim director Metropolitan Kashruth Council West Bloomfield Tarring Religion A letter writer states that Muslims have an understanding that they are "per- mitted to lie to prevent anticipated harm to one's self or fellow Muslims" and implies that this is something evil in Islam ("3 Powerful Words:' Nov. 19, page 5). A few pages later ("Jewish Vigilantism," Nov.19, page 28), we learn that a West Bank rabbi says the Torah permits Jews to kill non-Jews who threaten Israel. This statement is not refuted by other Jewish scholars in the article. Therefore, a Muslim reading the Jewish News could easily infer that Judaism promotes the killing of Muslims. Neither of these statements is helpful, nor do they advance the cause of mutual understanding. Yes, there are extremist Muslims — but there are also extremist Jews. Statements by neither extremist faction should be used to tar an entire religion. He joined the Shalem Cener in 2007 to help found Israel's first liberal arts college after spending nine years as vice president of the Mandel Foundation in Israel and director of its Leadership Institute. He moved to Israel in 1998.
