• Give only what people want and
need. Buy less.
• Give used and recycled instead of
new
• Give only Energy Star appli-
ances, equipment, electronics and
machinery(www.energystar.gov).
• Give carbon offsets as a gift (www.
nativeenergy.com ).
• If giving a car, give an energy-effi-
cient vehicle (www.fiieleconomy.
gov).
• Do not buy more than you need.
That goes for everything you buy.
There is no need for the latest and
greatest.
• Shop for locally made items, includ-
ing gifts, food — everything you
purchase. It takes energy to trans-
port products from far away.
• Remember to carry your canvas
bag, reused bag or backpack when-
ever shopping and say no to that
plastic bag for one or two items. You
will not get strange looks anymore!
• Use only recycled paper products
with the highest percentage of
post-consumer content available. Or
use old comics or old maps for gift
wrapping paper. Think creatively;
give gifts in a canvas bag.
• More ideas on gift wrapping include
reusing the many things you have
around the house. Reuse newspaper,
fabrics, tins, jars, bows, boxes and
paper gift tags.
• Give gifts labeled as FSC-certified
from sustainable forestry or reused
timber. Avoid virgin wood.
• Choose high-quality products that
last longer.

• Give gifts with minimal packaging:
Ship in bulk if possible to avoid
multiple deliveries and shipping.
• Shopping online will cut down your
driving and save on CO2.
• Send cards electronically. Avoid
postage, paper and shipping.
• Give gifts that require minimal
energy to create. Think about giving
charitable donations, tickets to con-
certs, sporting events, movies, the
theater and memberships to muse-
ums or a subscription to a local
farmer for fresh food delivery. Plant
a tree in someone's name. Make and
give away your specialty food, jams
and breads, or do a favor.
• Give used things such as antiques,
vintage items and rare things such
as books. Again think "reuse."
• Give gifts made of sustainable and
recycled materials. Avoid plastic
unless it is recycled. Think bamboo
and organic products rather than
synthetic. Check your labels. Only
use post-consumer recycled paper
for your cards tags and all paper
