opposite message: 'If you kill the Jews,
they will run away.'
Abu Toameh suggests making
Egypt and the Arab world respon-
sible for Gaza and putting pressure
on Fatah to reform itself. "The more
you embrace Fatah, the more you
undermine them:' he said.

In the meantime, Abu Toameh is more
worried about the deterioration of rela-
tions between Israel's Jews and its Arab
and other minorities.
"I'm very worried about this',' he
said. "Israel can be a Jewish state. We
have no problem with that. But please
be a Jewish state for all its citizens. I
can understand the fear of the Jews, but
it is a country of law and order. Israel
must give its minorities full rights; it
must make them feel welcome."
"We are fighting for integration; it
is the Palestinians who are fighting
for separation',' he said. "Please judge
me as to whether or not I am a good
citizen.
His tours of American college cam-
puses also worry him.
"I find more sympathy for Hamas on
some of these college campuses than
on the West Bank': he said. "This is not
freedom of expression; this is freedom
for incitement. We should all be very
worried; don't take it lightly. The next
generation of terrorists will graduate
not in Khandahar [Afghanistan], but
from our own college campuses:'
He tells protesters that if they are
truly pro-Palestinian and not just
anti-Israel, they should "campaign for
reform and democracy and work for
good government." He invites them
to come to the Palestinian world to
teach children English and to teach
Palestinians about democracy
"I was privileged to hear from
someone who knows the Arab street
so well and is willing to risk his life to
report if,' said Michael Serling of West
Bloomfield. "He sees the troubles and
understands it from both sides; and
he values the democratic institutions
and their importance, especially for the
Palestinians."
Renee Gerger of West Bloomfield
says it's only natural for Jews to want
Israel to find a way to bring peace, but
it's not only up to Israel. "I keep feeling
we should be doing something, but the
truth is that something has to happen
with [the Palestinians] if we are to
really advance peace."
