Still Busy

Still active Zionists and contribu-
tors to many Jewish causes and
charities, the Schumers belong to
Congregation Beth Shalom in Oak
Park. Bill is a former Oak Park
school board member. With no
thoughts of retiring, the Schumers
say they revel in the excitement of
operating a company, even with
all of the challenges in today's
business climate. "And we still
have faith in Detroit and want to
grow with the city," said Irene.
"The Schumers are a great
couple; a perfect example of how
a husband-and-wife team should
operate - both in business and
in their family life," said Allan
Gelfond of the Farmington Hills-
based office of the Technion-Israel
Institute of Technology in Haifa.
"They are dedicated to Zionism
and the Jewish community."
"I've already learned that this
is an all-consuming business,"
said daughter Sharon Schwartz.
"When most people go out to a

Old Henry Ford never knew
it, but there was a mezuzah in
Ford Motor Company's future
- three, in fact.
General Linen and Uni-
form Service's office/ware-
house now is part of the first
Ford manufacturing plant
at Piquette and Beaubien
streets in Detroit. President
Bill Schumer uses the same
corner office once occupied
by the elder Ford, inventor,
auto pioneer and infamous
anti-Semite.
One of Schumer's Jew-
ish employees brought in a
rabbi and he affixed mezuzot
to the office door frame, the
building's front door and,
more recently, on daughter
Sharon Schwartz's office.
