Steve Stein Special to the Jewish News T he 2010 JCC Maccabi Games will present unprecedented challenges for delegation heads like Detroit's Karen Gordon. That's because three cities will host the Games at the same time. Denver, Colo., Omaha, Neb., and Richmond, Va., will be hosts Aug. 1-6. Baltimore will host the Games the following week, Aug. 8-13. Normally, the Games are staggered over three or four weeks, which makes planning easier. "It will be difficult, but it is what it is," Gordon said. "Scheduling three Games in the same week isn't by design, believe me. That was the week those cities could host the Games." Gordon has been involved in the Games for 24 years. She said this is the first time three cities have hosted at the same time. "We've had two at a time, but never three she said. Gordon said Detroit athletes will head to Denver, Richmond and Baltimore. Which teams will go where hasn't been determined. In the meantime, interested Detroit athletes, families and volunteers are asked to contact Gordon at (248) 432- 5482 or kgordon@jccdet.org . For more information, check out www.maccabi- detroit org. This will be the third time that Omaha, Richmond and Baltimore will host the Games, but it will be a first for Denver. The folks at the Denver JCC have already gotten into the spirit of the Games, dubbing the Mile High City the "Mile Chai City" and referring to the Games as "Rachmanus in the Rockies." Check out www.jccdenver.org. The 2010 Maccabi ArtsFest, a celebra- tion of the arts, will be held in Baltimore and San Rafael, Calif., Aug. 8-13. 800 Series Is it more difficult to bowl a 300 game or 800 series? Lyle Schaefer, who has done both during his 25-year career on the lanes, says there no doubt it's an 800 series. "I've bowled five 300 games, and none have come during an 800 series:' the Southfield resident said. "It's very difficult to stay focused for three games. I've seen guys bowl a 150 after a 300." Schaefer, 51, has three 800 series to his credit in addi- tion to the 300 games. The lat- est was a 290- 234-279-803 last month in the Suburban Lakes League Lyle Schaefer at Drakeshire Lanes in Farmington Hills. After finishing the first game with 11 consecutive strikes, Schaefer began the second game with three straight strikes. Following back-to- back open frames — his first of the series — Schaefer threw strikes the rest of the game. Another open frame to start the third game left Schaefer with no mar- gin for error if he wanted to get his 800 series. He did what he needed to do, throwing 11 straight strikes. "It was one of those days where it feels like you're bowling into a wide pocket, just like a baseball player on a hitting hot streak says it looks like he's hitting a beach ball," Schaefer said. Two of Schaefer's three 800 series have been 803. He bowled 834 in 2007 in the University Men's League at Country Lanes in Farmington Hills. NHL Fab Five There are five Jewish players in the NHL this season. They're Anaheim Ducks right wing Mike Brown; Montreal Canadiens center Mike Cammalleri; Tampa Bay Lightning center Jeff Halpern; Calgary Flames left wing Eric Nystrom; and Vancouver Canucks defenseman Mathieu Schneider. Brown, 24, is the youngest of the five. Schneider, 40, is the oldest. He's a for- mer member of the Detroit Red Wings and an inductee into the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
