Berman Theatre, scheduled to
be completed next year at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield, will be a venue for a few
shows a season, especially musicals.
JET's Aaron DeRoy Theatre in the JCC
has 173 seats.
Orbach developed the current
season of JET plays before she left,
including The Blank Page, which
closes Sunday (Nov. 8); The Big Bang,
a musical for December/January;
The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, which
Bremer inserted to replace The
Foreigner for January/February; and
Palmer Park in the spring finale.
This season's patrons are being
asked to suggest future plays "and
we already have 50-60 new ideas:'
Magidson said.
While getting a bachelor's degree
in political science and a master's
in theater at the University of
Wisconsin, Magidson, in his 20s,
earned extra money on the local

comedy circuit, playing in a duo
called "The Lemon Brothers"
— named after an old group by his
mother, Lottie, because, she quipped,
"they never had a chance."
He adds, "We never had a chance
either." He realized early in his career
that he'd rather direct and teach than
perform.
He earned a Ph.D. in theater and
communications at the University of
Utah, then embarked on a series of
theater professorships and teaching
and directing positions at Hampton
(Va.) Institute, for seven years; the
University of New Hampshire, for 17
years; and the University of Colorado,
for two years, before coming to
Wayne, where he has directed plays
at the school's Bonstelle and Hilberry
theaters.
Magidson's wife, Leslee, is director
of the JCC in Oak Park. They have two
daughters and four grandchildren. 1 1

ANVIL HAMMERS ON from page 42

Reiner's father was a survivor of
Auschwitz. "He told us the life he
came from was something he never
wanted us to experience, so he kind
of sheltered us from it. My father saw
his father die in the camp, and he was
dying himself when the camp was
liberated; he didn't want me and my
sister to deal with that."
Perhaps because of his experienc-
es, Reiner's parents were very sup-
portive of his dream. "When I told
them I wanted to play the drums,
my parents bought me a drum set
and got me lessons. They let me quit
school. My dad was my biggest fan.
He told me he'd break my arms if I
decided to stop playing."
By contrast, Kudlow's parents
were more traditional. Both emi-
grated from Poland when they were
youngsters and met in Canada. "They
thought my music was only a hobby,"
Kudlow said. "They wanted me to be
a lawyer or a professional. A musi-
cian? Who was I kidding?"
His parents paid for guitar lessons,
but insisted he learn classical guitar
"because their pseudo-intellectual
friends told them you need that
background if you're going to have an
appreciation for music."
But Kudlow was interested in rock.
When his parents saw that the songs

Kudlow practiced after a lesson were
less classical and more contempo-
rary, they opted out of the lessons.
So for the most part, Kudlow is self-
taught.
Both contend that going from
Jewish households to heavy metal is
not a big leap. Others made it, most
famously Gene Simmons of Kiss, but
members of Rush and other groups
as well.
"Coming from Jewish families
you're given a sense of freedom:'
Kudlow said. "That is the underlying
thing. They gave me the opportu-
nity. They said go ahead with your
meshugah music. They may not have
helped me, but they didn't hold me
back."
Anvil enjoyed early success. The
album Metal on Metal and its title
song were considered anthems. "We
were derailed," Reiner said. "A man-
ager derailed us. Other bands came
around and took our style."
But things have turned around
again. Metal on Metal is being reis-
sued on VH-1 Classics. They have a
new CD, This is Thirteen, and a tour.
"One day, we knew we would get
here Kudlow says. "We've always had
a love for the music, and we wouldn't
give up on ourselves. Everything we
did, we did for the right reasons."
