Those unfamil- iar with or too young to remember those '80s eateries/hot spots might just break out in song with their first visit. Pete's Place — a.k.a. Pete's Broadway Cafe — resides at the intersection of the industrial through- way of Woodward Heights Boulevard and Hilton Road. A short drive from Ferndale's Woodward/Nine Mile scene, Pete's (which won the Ferndale Beautification Award) has the feel of a diner with higher aspirations, its Broadway-themed decor mixing easily with the more working-class feel of the industrial shops and comfortable, modest homes within its orbit. This affability extends beyond the surface, extending to the servers, the cooks and the clientele. And, of course, to the menu items themselves, which seem to be made with as much culi- nary pride as paternal instinct. You'll eat well, and you'll feel good about doing it. Feeling hearty? The Backstage burger will satisfy (as it always did), as will any of the just-messy-enough panini sandwiches. Pete's pasta options can compete with any of the area's Italian restaurants, especially the lemon garlic shrimp linguini or the pasta mezzogeorno (sweet sausage, baby spinach, roast- ed garlic, olive oil, Parmesan cheese). In a delicate mood? Try the sauteed chicken pecan salad along with a bowl of homemade chicken soup, the chicken marsala, or the broccoli, rigatoni and pine nuts, topped off by the bread pudding with dried cher- ries, white chocolate and Jack Daniel's bourbon sauce. And a must for any visit: the sauteed artichoke hearts with pesto and fresh spinach and a look to the specials board. While there are lighter choices for breakfast, it's better to arrive famished: two kinds of Benedict (clas- sic eggs or asparagus), petit filet and eggs, challah French toast and several omelets allow you to make the most of the most important meal of the day. With food for every mood and options for every meal — from breakfast, lunch and dinner to those that fall in between (brunch all-day Saturday and Sunday and open until 10 p.m. every night) — coming to Pete's Place will make you envious of the residents in the surrounding neighborhood, who must be tempted in way too often. But driving there is well worth it, and on a cool autumn evening, on your way back to the car, Pete's is the kind of place you know you'll come back to. And we're glad he came back to us.
