Honoring Champions of Disabled Micah Fialka-Feldman receives Champion of Disabled award. SheIli Liebman Dorfman Senior Writer 0 n Oct. 3, the Detroit Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild honored Micah Fialka-Feldman and Judge Deborah Thomas as Champions of the Disabled. Micah, 25, of Huntington Woods, was honored for his work as a disabled activist and his commit- ment to full inclusion. Diagnosed with cognitive develop- ment disorder, Micah is an advocate for individuals with disabilities. In 2004, he received the Michigan Council for Exceptional Children's Yes I Can! Award for his self-advocacy. He is a national board member of Kids as Self Advocates (KASA), a pub- lished author and national speaker on inclusion and inclusive post sec- ondary experiences. Micah is enrolled in Oakland University's Options Program, designed for students with cogni- tive impairments who cannot be admitted to the Rochester Hills- based school through the regular admissions process. He is currently involved in a federal lawsuit against Oakland University in his quest to live in the school's dormitory — something he says has been denied to him as an Options Program stu- dent. According to Richard Feldman, Micah's father, "Micah believes it is his right to live in the dormitory B'nai Moshe Honors Vets Every year Congregation B'nai Moshe in West Bloomfield hosts a Veterans Day program to honor those who fought for freedom.
