Obituaries Obituaries are updated and archived on thejewishnews.com MARGARET ALPER, 94, of Southfield, died Oct. 23, 2009. She gave of her heart not only to fam- ily and friends but to her community. In addition to working for the Detroit Board of Education for more than 20 years, she was active in several civic, school and charitable organizations and was a board member of the Jewish Community Center. Mrs. Alper was a talented swimmer, winning medals both as a teenager and as a participant in local and national Senior Olympics. She was also an avid bridge player and her beautiful knitting is cherished by many family members. Above all, she will be remembered for her devotion to family, acceptance and tolerance of others and her genuine concern and interest in the well being of those around her. Mrs. Alper is survived by her daugh- ters, Paula Katz (Isaac) of Oak Park, Barbara Alper of New York City; son, Dr. Bernard Alper (Candace) of West Bloomfield; grandchildren, Edith (Matthew) Kamins, Leonard (Sarah) Katz, Reva (Yisroel) Safrin, Jeffrey Katz, Dr. Jason (Dr. Jennifer Rush) Alper, Dr. Aaron (Candice Lazar) Alper; great- grandchildren, Batsheva (Ari Rosen), Nechemia, Yeshaya and Yechezkal Kamins, Noah and Adam Alper, Esther Frayda and Nechama Perel Safrin; great- great-grandchild, Shifra Rosen. She was the wife for 60 years of the beloved Dr. Abraham Alper; mother of the late Kenneth David; sister of the late Elsie Gitelson and the late Leslie Ehrlich. Interment at Machpleah Cemetery. He was born and lived most of his life in the Detroit area. Mr. Bernstein worked hard all of his life to provide for his fam- ily. The last five and a half years, he lived in Seattle at the Summit at First Hill, where he volunteered as a floor manager, a position he was very proud of holding. Mr. Bernstein loved to tell a story to all who would listen. He was a very dear and positive man up until the end. He loved people and loved life. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Lois Bernstein and Will Vargish; sons and daughter-in-law, Sheldon and Prithi Bernstein, Murray Bernstein; grandchildren, Kate Vargish, Nick Vargish, Ivan Bernstein; nieces, Florence Schuman, Helen Klau, Mirrial Hirsch; great-nieces and great-nephews, Laurie Brown, Manny Brown, Richard Brown, Dennis Brown, Nancy Schuman, Robert Schuman, Carol Klau, Morris Klau, Robin Wine and Susan Klau. From 1957-1983, he was the co-owner (with his dear late brother Irving Cohen) of the Princeton Shop Cohen in Detroit and West Bloomfield. With children and grandchil- dren, he and his wife enjoyed yearly fam- ily reunions and traveled far and wide on family cruises. Mr. Cohen graduated from Wayne State in accounting and served honorably during World War II. He was a member of B'nai B'rith Morganthau Lodge. He was beloved by his family and modeled his commitment to work and family after his father, Isadore Cohen. Mr. Cohen supported many charities and volunteered for Meals on Wheels into his 80s. Mr. Cohen is survived by his wife, Viola Cohen, with whom he enjoyed a loving 67-year marriage; his sons and daugh- ters-in-law, Steven and Toni Cohen of California, Ronald and Christie Cohen of Oregon, Jeff Cohen of New York; grand- children, Trent Cohen, Zachary Cohen, Heather Cohen, Muir and Jenny Cohen, Jasmine Cohen, Sequoia Kristal-Cohen, Cady Kristal-Cohen; sister, Shirley Monson; sister-in-law, Evelyn Cohen; Bloom's 74 nieces and nephews.
