ore than 300 friends, fam-
ily and colleagues honored
36 Jewish community
volunteers at "Where the Heroes Are:
Mitzvah Heroes in Our Community,"
an event sponsored by Shalom Street:
The Address for Jewish Discovery at
the Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
The event was part of the museum's
newest exhibit "Where the Wild
Things Are: A Retrospective of the
Work of Maurice Sendak," which con-
tinues through the end of the year.
The honorees were chosen by 33
agencies, schools and congregations,
said Wendy Sadler, Shalom Street direc-
tor. In four years, the event has honored
100 volunteers ranging in age from
98 to 22, she said, and the qualifica-
tions are clear. "They cannot be a paid
employee or a current or past president
of an agency or congregation:'
This year's youngest honoree was
Andrew Ceifetz, 29, of Walled Lake, who
has served as an adviser and mentor to

The oldest honoree was Rose
Stocker, 92, of West Bloomfield, a
retired executive secretary and buyer
for the Marathon Oil Company, who
has volunteered in JARC's develop-
ment department for 12 years.
"They are not honorees; they are
heroes," said Sharon Hart, Shalom
Street's past chair.
"I am happy to see so many people
here to honor the volunteers who con-
tribute so much time and energy to
the betterment of each of their organi-
zations, and thus to the betterment of
our community as a whole:' said Paula
Glazier, Shalom Street co-chair with
Linda Hayman.
"Everyone being honored today
helps make our Jewish commu-
nity in Detroit stronger:' said Rabbi
Judah Isaacs, director of Federation's
Alliance for Jewish Education.
"Everyone in this room today can
proudly say am Jewish Detroit. I
care. I help. I give:" Ill
