THE BEST OF EVERYTHING

Home Cooking Close To Home

Siegel's offers delish deli and restaurant fare plus genuine Old World specialties.

T

hose living nearby are lucky ...
They have something that very
few areas can boast of, an honest-
to-goodness mom-and-pop neighborhood
Jewish delicatessen-restaurant.
And once the word got out, in addition
to the local crowd, many diners are happy
to come from each and every direction
to be regulars at Siegel's Delicatessen-
Restaurant on Maple Road, just west of
Haggerty, in Commerce Township.
These days, a true mom-and-pop neigh-
borhood Jewish delicatessen is very rare,
especially with both the man and wife
preparing deliciously fresh, made-at-the-
restaurant food and each working together
seven days a week from open to close ...
When the deli, originally opened in 1995
by Elliot Siegel, was taken over five years
ago by hard-working owners Boris and
Angela Izrailov, they began to carve a fine
mom-and-pop, neighborhood niche with
so many wholesome elements.
Boris' 18-year dining experience takes
in ownership of four other local delis
before this, all bearing his first name. ...
He and Angela came to the United States
from Russia in 1992, where Boris was his
own chef and Angela a customer at his
restaurant.
Mom-and-pop restaurants are not only
owned by a husband and wife, but also
present many food preparations made
fresh and on the premises by one or the
other ... In the case of Siegel's Deli, both
Boris and Angela are each responsible
for the excellently prepared dishes served
by competent, efficient waitpersons that
include their son, Vitaly Izrailov.
Many of the recipes have been handed
down by Boris' mother, Mina, who now
lives with them, and Angela's late grand-
mother, both noted in Russia for their

culinary prowess.
Angela's stuffed cabbage is
beyond description, succulently
tasty, moist and tender ... Her
crispy and juicy roasted half-
chicken is a huge favorite, as are
Angela's brisket of beef, short
ribs, cheese blintzes, wonderful
apple and blueberry strudel,
knishes stuffed with beef or
potatoes, stuffed peppers, prem-
ises-made turkey burger as pre-
pared in Russia, desserts, etc.
Besides his fine soups,
chicken noodle, matzah balls (made by
him), or kreplach (made by Angela), cab-
bage borscht, mushroom barley, etc., Boris
makes the rice pudding and prepares lamb
ribs, steaks, lamb chops, etc.
No mom-and-pop restaurant would
be a good, authentic one without its own
mashed potatoes, not the dry powdered
kind or pre-prepared used in so many eat-
eries ... And being health advocates, Boris
and Angela have monthly delivery from
Russia of pomegranate juice that is said
to help reduce premature aging and heart
problems ... In quart bottles, they sell for
$2.99 ... Smaller versions of pomegranate
juice are sold elsewhere in the $5 range.
Specials? ... For sure ... Like the steak
dinner for two (1 lb. each) or lamb chops
for two (three each), $13.95 ... and the
rack of lamb ribs (10 pieces), $7.99,
among others ... All include soup or
salad, potato and vegetable.
Siegel's Delicatessen-Restaurant is
open seven days a week, 8 a.m.-9 p.m. ...
Breakfast special has two eggs, hashed
browns, choice of three meats, toast and
coffee, $2.99 ... Seating is between 90 and
100 in a clean, casual dining room of stark
white walls and one a soft green, etched

glass in the semi-enclosed
foyer, etc.
And among the many big
assets of a good mom-and-
pop neighborhood restaurant
are its low prices that go with
the premises-made fresh food
... Siegel's Deli lives up to this
reputation with blazing colors
... truly a wonderful dining
asset to any community.
A LIQUOR LICENSE
is soon expected by Sam
Sharkas at Italia Fresca,
Orchard Lake Road and Middlebelt, Sylvan
Lake ... Although already open, Sam's
grand-opening rollout will take place
when the license comes ... With road
work being done on Orchard Lake Road,
many folks are by-passing it and going up
Middlebelt ... No coupon is necessary for
the 25-percent-off dinner prices Monday-
Friday, 4-6:30.
DELISH DINING DEPT. ... Try the
new chicken with lemon and asparagus,
including soup or salad, potatoes or rice
and vegetables, $12.95 ... D'Pauli's in
Sugar Tree, Orchard Lake Road, north of
15 Mile, West Bloomfield.
EVER HAVE INK for dinner? ... Those
attending the 25th Anniversary Induction
Dinner by Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of
Fame can say yes.
Among caterer Paul Kohn's glatt kosher
goodies will be dinner dessert of mocha
torte with the MJSF Hall of Fame logo in
ink on each piece ... But don't worry, folks,
it'll be sugar-made edible ink ... Also, a
large "25" made of cake will contain names
of the more than 80 past inductees.
MJSHF's 25th Anniversary shindig is
6 p.m. this Monday, Nov. 2, at the Jewish
Community Center, West Bloomfield.

in Sidney's Regent Street apartment.
