etroit's newest Jewish agency
— Jewish Senior Life — is
in no hurry to find a chief
executive officer.
The national
search for JSEs CEO
began a year ago, in
October 2008, and
the agency continues
to seek out a leader
"who has expertise in
senior services on a
Fred
community basis."
Blechman
Fred Blechman,
president of JSL, said
the merger of Jewish Home & Aging
Services and Jewish Apartments &
Services in June into JSL was just part
of the story. "This is a consolidation of
all senior services" within the Jewish
community, including senior programs
offered by the Jewish Community
Center of Metropolitan Detroit, Jewish
Family Service and JVS.
Blechman said JSL is making good
progress on merging the different
components and building a "strong
foundation.
"I'm not concerned," he said, "about
the speed of the search for a CEO. The
field is changing rapidly and many
communities are seeking geriatric
management. We want to build a first-
class agency. We are moving forward
at a good, deliberate pace and building
a strong foundation."
Before being elected president of

JSL in June, when the agency formally
came into being, Blechman chaired
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's Commission on Jewish
Eldercare Services.
Marsha Goldsmith Kamin, who has
headed Jewish Apartments & Services
since 1991, said last week that the
CEO position "is not replacing anyone.
Everyone is staying put, moving ahead
on what we are supposed to be doing
as we build JSL."
Carol Rosenberg, who heads Jewish
Home & Aging Services, agreed. "This is
going to serve as the front door" for care
and programming for Jewish seniors in
the Detroit area, she said. "We are very
pleased with this re-structuring, and it's
been a long time in coming."
Rosenberg said she and Kamin are
sharing the responsibility of leading
JSL until a CEO is selected. "I have 30
years of service to the community,"
Rosenberg said, "and I want to see
this through." Rosenberg has been
the director of Jewish Home & Aging
Services for five years.
"Experience is a great teacher:' she
said, "and Marsha and I feel we can
make a difference. Our community is
living longer and we have the second
oldest Jewish community in the coun-
try," after Florida.
Rosenberg did not apply for the JSL
CEO position. Kamin intereviewed for
the job, but was not selected.
Blechman lauded the two, but said
the new agency's focus for the CEO
was much broader. "It's not just hous-
ing," he said. LI

Gossip Girl message.
Generally, the Gossip Girl TV
series and books give unrealistic
images of how teen girls "should"
look and act.
