What was once primarily accessed by young adults, online learning is fast becoming the way to make a job market transition and even graduate from high school. As online classes become larger and more diverse, it's imperative for com- munity colleges and universities to continue improving these courses. "Best Practices in Online Education" can help educators meet these expecta- tions. The eighth annual Symposium for Excellence in Online Learning runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, at Macomb Community College University Center, Center Campus, 44575 Garfield Road, Clinton Township, MI 48038. It is open to all educators, including Jewish day school instructors. As more students become accus- tomed to online courses, they want educators to know what's working and what is not. During one of three infor- mational sessions at the symposium, educators can meet with a panel of students from area community col- leges to hear their recommendations. But adult students aren't the only ones involved in distance learning. To meet state high school graduation requirements, students must complete an online learning experience. One way they can satisfy that requirement is through dual enroll- ment; taking online college courses while still in high school. That's why the symposium features a panel on trends in K-12 education online initiatives. The Symposium includes a faculty panel about engaging online students and will feature speaker Matt Roush, WWJ-Newsradio 950's technology editor, Great Lakes IT Report. Kevin Krason, president and founder of Biznet.com; Karen Kelley from Cisco Systems and Bruce Umpstead, Director, Office of Educational Technology and Data Coordination, Michigan Department of Education, will also be featured speakers. Promoting best-practices so all stu- dents in the area benefit from online degree programs relevant to the job market is the goal of the Alliance for Excellence in Online Education, an event sponsor. Others include Macomb Community College, Northwood University, UCompass.com/Educator, Cengage Learning and Cisco. The cost, $100 for Alliance members and $150 for others, includes break- fast, breakout sessions, luncheon and vendors. Register at www.a4eoe.org .
