It Takes A Village

David Sachs
Senior Copy Editor

T

he 23-year-old Heidelberg
Project is an ongoing neigh-
borhood art endeavor that
has beautified a once desolate spot on
Detroit's near east side. Project leaders
now plan to create a Cultural Village in
its area on and around Heidelberg Street
between Gratiot and Mt. Elliott.
With the assistance of Erb Foundation
Vice President Jodee Fishman Raines, the
project has received a $100,000 grant.
In addition, it has hired its first director
of development, Sharon Luckerman of
Detroit. Luckerman, a former develop-
ment officer at Wayne State University's
School of Business Administration and
former staff writer for the Detroit Jewish

News, will team with Executive Director
Jenenne Whitfield and the board to gain
support for the village.
This year has seen Heidelberg's found-
er, artist Tyree Guyton, receive a Kresge
Artist's grant and an honorary Ph.D. from
the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit.
Also, the project has moved headquarters
to offices at Woodward and Watson in
Detroit.
Other community members working
to aid the Heidelberg Project include
Leor Barack of Steve Tobocman's non-
profit Community Legal Resources, Mitch
Alexander of Local Initiatives Support
Corporation and Beth Diamond, an assis-
tant professor at the University of Michigan.
The planned Cultural Village will
include a community center, themed-art
houses and a playhouse-amphitheater. Beth
