Rabbi Dovid Potter with the new gravestone for Mae Bochco.

R

abbi Dovid Polter of
the Jewish Community
Chaplaincy Program recalls
when he was about 7 going with
his class to a nursing home during
Chanukah. He saw an old woman,
ravaged by sickness and age, trying to
make her way over to where he was.
She flailed her arms as she tried to
maneuver her wheelchair toward him.
He was scared and couldn't imagine
why this woman was doing this.
She told his teacher that she wanted
to hug and kiss him because he
reminded her of the son she lost in the
Holocaust. Not only did the old woman
get her wish, but comforting the elderly
also became a calling for Polter; and he
has since dedicated his life to working
with them in a very special way.
The Chaplaincy Program recently
turned 13 and so far more than 34,000
Jewish residents have been served
throughout Metro Detroit. He shares this
duty with Rabbi Irving Schnipper as
well as 50 parachaplains and volunteers.
When he received a call concerning
an older woman who might benefit
from his spiritual guidance, he drove
to a nursing home in Taylor where he
met the woman and began monthly
visits with her. Polter does this with
many elderly in the community, but
what made this visit so special was
that he made arrangements to come
back and visit her on her birthday
— her 110th birthday.
"I asked her for a blessing; to bless
my family that we should have a good
life Polter explained. "But she thought

I was asking her about dressing."
Mae Bochco had no known relatives
or friends and little was known about
her life. The caregivers suspected she
was Jewish when they learned her real
name was Malkah.
During his visits, Polter would com-
bine music, prayer and conversation to
comfort her. Soon, it was apparent that
her health was in fast decline. He pre-
pared a list of Jewish customs for the
non-Jewish care staff detailing what to
do when her death became imminent.
When Poker heard about a pre-paid
burial in a non- Jewish cemetery, he
had the arrangement transferred to
Hebrew Memorial Park in Clinton
Township.
When she died on Jan. 29, 2009, her
story had spread in the community
because of Polter. Nearly 30 people,
who never knew her, joined him at her
funeral to recite Kaddish.
Next, he began raising money for
a headstone, beginning with his own
contribution. With the funding com-
plete, a headstone was purchased; on
Aug. 30, an unveiling took place.
Rabbi Poker's walk with Mae was
a quiet, but powerful discovery of
faith and a testament to the strength
and importance of the aging ser-
vices division of Jewish Senior Life of
Metropolitan Detroit.
