"When you have a collection of
something as valuable as $20,000, you
have to protect it, so I'm very meticu-
lous about how I take care of my
MADs," Warner said. That was the CPA
part of him talking.
Ficarra was impressed that anyone
would take such good care of the
wacky magazine that has seen many
editors and writers come and go,
including such other Jewish jokesters
as editor Al Feldstein, who replaced
Kurtzman early in the series, and
famed writer Will Elder (Eisenberg),
who died last year at 95.

Commenting On History
The Jewish influence in MAD has
yielded many Yiddish-isms over the
years, he said. In a satire on the movie
The Sting, the Paul Newman charac-
ter of Henry Gondorf was changed
to Henry Goniff (thief). A parody of
the film and TV program M*A*S*H
became Mishigos (craziness).
"Issue No. 5 was the only one ever
yanked off the newsstand — because
it caused an uproar among readers
for depicting too much violence
bemoaned Warner in his best MAD
historian tone. "Issue No. 60 in early
1961 was unique because it had
twin covers. One side showed John
E Kennedy defeating Richard M.
Nixon for president and the other

side showed Nixon beating Kennedy.
Because of the magazine's long lead
time, it went to press before the out-
come was known."
Through 38 years of marriage,
Warner's wife, Linda, and daughters,
Amanda and Valarie, have aided and
abetted his quest for "missing" issues
from time to time. Amanda calls the
collection "cool" and "amazing."
Warner also is a Civil War memo-
rabilia fan and science fiction buff,
owning all 209 episodes of the former
Stargate SG 1 TV series. He also col-
lects miscellaneous posters and his-
toric newspaper front pages.
MAD now is published quarterly
with fewer pages, which Ficarra attri-
butes to the high cost of newsprint,
reduced advertising and the pitfalls of
a sluggish economy. In fact, the maga-
zine avoided advertising until about 10
years ago before capitulating to corpo-
rate greed.
"We haven't cut back because
of lack of material, that's for sure
mused Ficarra. "With the nature of the
politicians and other characters in the
country today, it's impossible to run
out of humorous material."
And as long as MAD insults them,
Warner promises he'll keep buying the
magazine. This month he started on
what may be another 500 by acquiring
No. 501. 1
