Peters Seeks To
Fund Preservation
Of Auschwitz Site

0

n Sept. 12, U.S. Rep. Gary
Peters, D-Bloomfield
Township, and 44 other
congressional members called upon
President Obama and Secretary
of State Hillary Clinton to join the
international
community in
committing funds
to the Auschwitz-
Birkenau
Foundation, which
seeks to preserve
the decaying Nazi
death camp to
Rep. Peters
ensure that the
atrocities of the Holocaust never
occur again.
The Polish, German, British and
French governments as well as the
European Union have made commit-
ments. But the United States so far
has committed to little more than a
promise to review the Foundation's
plans.
Reads the letter, in part: "The
United States must be a leader in the
fight against hatred and bigotry by
safeguarding an honest record of our
history so that future generations
may learn from it. We simply cannot
afford to neglect the preservation of
this rapidly degrading site."
"It is our duty as Americans to
ensure that Elie Wiesel's message
`Never Forget' is put to action:' Peters
said. "This letter urges the U.S. to
join the international effort to pre-
serve the facts about the atrocities
of the Nazis so that the 11 million
innocent Holocaust victims, includ-
ing six million Jews, are remembered
always. The international communit
is acting and the United States must
do its fair share in this endeavor."
Auschwitz-Birkenau was the larg-
est Nazi concentration camp, the site
of more than 1.1-million murders
through systematic starvation, forced
labor, individual execution and gas
chambers. The Foundation is seeking
to accumulate $160 million for the
conservation of the grounds, build-
ings, and artifacts of the death camp.
Congressman Peters and other
House colleagues of many faiths
and both political parties are calling
upon the Obama administration to at
least match the highest contribution
pledged to the Auschwitz-Birkenau
Foundation as soon as possible. F
