T
he Cancer Thrivers Network
for Jewish Women will
mark its first year of cel-
ebrating life by saying thank you to
the special, supportive and inspi-
rational people who have enriched
their lives. The celebration takes
place 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20, at
the Janice Charach Gallery at the
Jewish Community Center in West
Bloomfield. Reservations are request-
ed. Donation: $5 minimum per per-
son. Dessert reception will follow.
Linda Diaz will speak on "The
Invaluable Gift of Friendship &
Support" and the gallery's exhibit,
"The Bra Show" will be seen.
In the Jewish tradition of com-
munity, last year a few women got
together to find a way to connect
with other Jewish women who
have been touched by cancer. Their
goal: create a sisterhood of thrivers
— women who believe that posi-
tive feelings and experiences enrich
their lives and contribute to good
health. One year later, 150 women
are represented on the Thrivers
roster. Women of all ages, with all
types of cancer, past or present,
meet monthly to exercise, experi-
ence art, hear speakers and just
enjoy each other's company.
Susan Chomsky, a JCC staff
member who lives in Southfield,
attended her first Thrivers Network
program the very night before her
surgery. Why? The group was new
and not well known at the time. But
Chomsky came. She said, "There
are many support groups available
to women dealing with cancer;
however, having a Jewish voice, the
Cancer Thrivers Network spoke to
me at the core level. It was beshert
to come the night before my sur-
gery. Facing something strange and
overwhelming, I met women who
did not have a 'cancer face'. They
made me feel hopeful:'
The Network is a program of
