Anti-Semitism In Spain
Madrid/JTA Anti-Semitism is
on the rise in Spain, according to
a new Anti-Defamation League
report.
The report points to "more public
expressions and greater acceptance
of virulent anti-Jewish attitudes:'
It focuses on recent trends
in Spain, including anti-Jewish
attitudes during Israel's Gaza
military offensive last winter and
anti-Semitic cartoons in the main-
stream media. Also, opinion polls
conducted over the past year show
a rise in anti-Semitic attitudes.
"We are deeply concerned about
the mainstreaming of anti-Semitism
in Spain, with more public expres-
sions and greater public acceptance
of classic stereotypes:' said Abraham
Foxman, ADL's director.
Of particular concern, accord-
ing to the report, are the "viciously
anti-Semitic" cartoons in main-
stream Spanish newspapers such as
El Pais and El Mundo.

Answering
Israel's Critics

The Charge
Critics of Israel on college cam-
puses charge that their efforts
are stifled by those who say the
criticism is anti-Semitism.

The Answer
The pro-Israel community cher-
ishes free speech and is inspired
by the lively criticism that exists
in Israeli press and society.
But, if thinly disguised anti-
Semitism and Holocaust denial
appear, they do not hesitate to
call them out.

WHY we are helping:

The federal government through HUD is targeting
borrowers in need of mortgage payment and
foreclosure relief. To assist Jewish homeowners in
understanding and qualifying for these government
programs, the Jewish Housing Association, a
Michigan nonprofit corporation, has established the
"Making Home Affordable Initiative."

Jewish Housing Association of Metropolitan Detroit, Inc.
is a nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to ensure that
no Jewish family goes without housing and to assist the
Jewish community during this time of crisis. The JHA works
in partnership with its sister agencies: Jewish Federation
of Metropolitan Detroit and Jewish Family Service of
Metropolitan Detroit.
