Women In Philanthropy Sinai Guild to host Dr. Oz at its Oct. 13 fundraiser. Rusty Rosman Sandi Matz Robyn Gorell Special to the Jewish News B ack in 1952, a group of Detroiters formed the Women's Auxiliary of Sinai Hospital of Detroit, later to become the Sinai Guild. Comprised mostly of women and a handful of men, this fledgling organization was up and running when Sinai Hospital officially opened its doors the following year. It was relatively difficult in those days for Jewish physicians to have medical privileges in public hospitals, so Sinai was the Jewish community's response. The Sinai Guild's volunteers were everywhere, filing, transporting X-rays, working as candy stripers, manning surgical waiting rooms and providing many support services later carried out by staff. The Guild also owned and operated the hospital gift shop, its major fundraising endeavor. Sinai Hospital was acquired by the Detroit Medical Center (DMC) in 1997 and closed its doors two years later. Today, the Sinai Guild's mission is to support and promote medical and sci- entific activities that benefit both the Jewish and Metro Detroit communities through the DMC and Jewish communal agencies. To do this, it awards grants for medical research and technology. On Tuesday, Oct. 13, the Guild is holding its "Women in Philanthropy" fundraiser at Congregation Shaarey Zedek Southfield. Dr. Mehmet Oz is the featured speaker. Dr. Oz is the author of YOU: Staying Young and Healing from the Heart. He is professor of cardiac surgery at Columbia University and a founder of the comple- mentary medicine program at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He is a frequent guest on The Oprah Winfrey Show and Discovery Health, and his syndicated television program, "Dr. Oz," recently premiered on WDIV-TV. Sandi Matz, a co-chair of Women in Philanthropy, explained, "We're bring- ing in Dr. Oz for this event because he's very well thought of and will draw large crowds." During the luncheon event, the Sinai Guild is announcing the opportunity to participate in a national women's heart study. The study protocol was designed by Theodore L. Schreiber, M.D., FACC, professor of medicine at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit and specialist-in- chief, cardiovascular medicine presi- dent, DMC Cardiovascular Institute. Monies raised from the Oct. 13 event will help purchase portable, advanced Dr. Mehmet Oz duplex ultrasounds with vascular reac- tivity assessment for DMC hospitals. "It is heartwarming to see the results of what is achieved by our grants," said Rusty Rosman, Sinai Guild presi- dent. I I Robyn Gorell is a vice president at Marx Layne & Co. communications.
