Synagogue Unearthed
A 2,000-year-old synagogue from
the Second Temple period was dis-
covered this month during archaeo-
logical excavations by the Israel
Antiquities Authority in Migdal near
the Sea of Galilee.
The 390-square-foot synagogue
contains mosaic floors and walls
covered with frescos. Also, a square
stone featuring sides adorned with
reliefs and engraved with a seven-
branched menorah was discovered in
the hall atop a pedestal with a trian-
gular base.
"This is the first time a menorah
decoration was discovered from the
Second Temple Period," says Dina
Avshalom-Gorni, excavation direc-
tor, Israel Antiquities Authority. "And
the synagogue that was uncovered
joins just six other synagogues in the
world that are known to date to the

The military maneuvers by the

over Iran's nuclear program and just

Iranian state television reported
that Iran test-fired two short-range

Chavez, who severed diplomatic
relations with Israel last January
following its military offensive in
Gaza, accused Israel of committing
genocide in Gaza during his speech
Sept. 24 to the U.N. General Assembly.
Chavez said his criticisms were
directed toward the government of
Israel and not its citizens.
On King's show that night, Chavez
continued to criticize the Jewish state,
calling it a war-mongering country.
Without referring to Chavez by name,
Venezuela's Chief Rabbi Pynchas
Brener said much of the criticism
being volleyed against Israel was
anti-Semitic.

Chavez, who used his trip to the
United Nations as a pulpit to criticize
the State of Israel, in an interview
Sept. 24 with Larry King stopped
short of condemning the Iranian
president, whom Chavez has said is
among Venezuela's closest allies.
"I do not deny the Jewish
Holocaust. And I condemn it," Chavez
said.

Architect Daniel
Berlin/JTA
Libeskind was hired to design a new
synagogue for the progressive con-

Libeskind and his wife, Nina, are
due to visit the site of the future syna-
gogue and Jewish community center
on Oct. 15. Meetings with local politi-
