View From Washington
Ron Kampeas, the Washington
bureau chief for the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency (JTA), will speak
on "Obama and Netanyahu: A View
From Washington to Jerusalem"
at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 15, at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek, 27375
Bell Road, in Southfield.
While discussing U.S.-Israel rela-
tions, Kampeas will analyze the per-
sonal relationship between Obama
and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin
Netanyahu.
He also will examine the roles of
key players such as Special White
House Mideast Envoy George
Mitchell, longtime peace negotiator
Dennis Ross, White House Senior
Adviser David Axelrod and Chief of
Staff Rahm Emanuel (the latter three
are Jewish).
Kampeas also looks at the roles
of Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor
Lieberman, Deputy Foreign Minister
Danny Ayalon and Michael Oren,
Israel's new American-born ambas-
sador to Washington.
Also in the mix are the Jewish lob-
bies J Street and the American Israel
Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC)
and pro-Palestinian lobbies in
Washington.
Kampeas will speak as well on
the effect the Israeli press and the
American mainstream media have on
Middle East affairs.
The free program is presented by
the Jewish Community Relations
Council in cooperation with
Congregation Shaarey Zedek. For
information, call (248) 642-5393.

The Jewish

of Metropolitan
Detroit's 2009
Jewish Book Fair
is hosting an essay
Martin Indyk
contest with a first

two runner-up prizes of $250 each.
Held in conjunction with the
appearance of Book Fair's open-
ing-night speaker, former U.S.

eignty over Jerusalem. Do you believe
that an international city, governed
by both Israel and the Palestinians, is
possible? If so, explain how this could
work. If not, who do you believe has
the most rights to retain control of
the city, and why?"
All essays should be typed and no
more than 800 words. Essays must be
submitted no later than 4 p.m. Friday,
Oct. 30. Winners will be notified by
