Mayor Ellis Eyes New Term
Jerry M. Ellis is running for re-election
as mayor of Farmington Hills. He was
first elected mayor in November 2007.
Ellis was elected
to the city council
in August 1996 and
was re-elected in
November 1997,
2001 and 2005. He
served as mayor pro
tern in 2000 and
Jerry Ellis
again in 2004.
Ellis serves
as chairman of the Southwestern
Oakland Cable Commission and
has been a SWOCC commissioner
since 1999. He is the council liaison
to the Farmington Hills Economic
Development Corporation and the
Farmington/Farmington Hills Chamber
of Commerce. He is the Southeast
Michigan Council of Governments'
delegate and Eight Mile Boulevard
Association alternate delegate.
Ellis has served as a board member
of the Oakland County Community
Mental Health Authority and has
served locally on the 47th District
Court Facilities Committee, the Year
2000 Committee and the Farmington
Hills Ice Arena Committee. He served
on the Farmington Hills Parks and
Recreation Commission for 10 years,
including three as chairman.
In 1990, he received the Farmington
Area Jaycees Distinguished Citizen
Award for service to the community.
Ellis is a Michigan State University
Detroit College of Law graduate. He
attended the John F. Kennedy School
of Government at Harvard University.
Ellis has been a practicing attorney
for more than 40 years and is a senior
member of the Farmington Hills law
firm of Couzens, Lansky, Fealk, Ellis,
Roeder & Lazar P.C. He is a 34-year
resident of Farmington Hills.

New Hillel-Detroit Leader
Neil Cantor is new director of Jewish
Student Life at Hillel of Metro Detroit.
He will oversee HMD's programs
on the six college campuses served
by HMD: Wayne State University,
Oakland University, University
of Michigan Dearborn, Lawrence
Technological
University, Oakland
Community College
and University of
Detroit Mercy.
He also will super-
vise the program
staff and student
Neil Cantor
interns.

Cantor will work as an informal
Jewish educator and will coordinate
student leadership development,
marketing and community relations
in regards to programming. He will
engage and assist Jewish undergradu-
ate and graduate students.
"I hope to be able to connect
students and young adults with the
knowledge and resources available for
them to become active members of the
Detroit Jewish community" he said.
Cantor, orignally from Richmond,
Va., received his J.D. degree from
Thomas M. Cooley Law School
in Lansing and his B.S. degree in
political science and journalism from
Northeastern University in Boston. He
lives in Flint with his wife, Ilene.
Cantor is active in Flint's Jewish com-
munity where he is a board member of
the Flint Jewish Federation and a vice
president of Congregation Beth Israel.

Welcome, Dr. Oz
The Sinai Guild will present the
noted physician, author and medi-
cal expert Dr. Mehmet Oz at its
"Women in Philanthropy Women's
Heart Health Benefit:' Tuesday, Oct.
13, at Congregation Shaarey Zedek
Southfield. Registration begins at 11:15
a.m., followed by Dr. Oz's remarks at
noon. A luncheon will follow.
Oz, author of
YOU: Staying Young
and Healing from the
Heart, is professor
of cardiac surgery at
Columbia University
in New York City
and is known for his
Mehmet Oz
appearances on The
Oprah Winfrey Show
and Discovery Health. His own syndi-
cated TV program Dr. Oz is on WDIV,
Channel 4.
The Sinai Guild was created in
1952 as a women's auxiliary to Sinai
Hospital in Detroit. Funds will help
purchase a portable, advanced ultra-
sound device for Detroit Medical
Center hospitals that can help assess a
patient's future cardiovascular trends.
"Women in Philanthropy is an
important example of the Sinai Guild's
philanthropic outreach',' said Rusty
Rosman, guild president, citing the
acomplishments of local women who
provide support for medical treatment
and research. "We are thrilled that Dr.
Oz will be joining us to help make that
a possibility this year:' she said.
