■ WHERE DO YOU CO? Increasingly, though, younger men are being diagnosed with prostate cancer. "The trend in recent years is earlier diagnosis," said Cher. "Definitely, we're finding prostate cancer in younger men more these days." Treatment protocol depends on the nature of a patient's prostate cancer. When a patient undergoes a biopsy, a pathologist determines whether cancer is present. If it is present, the pathologist deter- mines the cancer's grade and if the patterns of cancer cells are con- sistent with either faster-growing or slower-growing cancer. Doctors then ascertain the probability of a specific treatment's success. Cher explained that if the patient is elderly with a low-risk prostate cancer, but has many other serious medical problems, doctors may take an active sur- veillance approach by keeping a close eye on the cancer and react- ing if the cancer worsens. If the patient is young, that patient can opt for a more aggressive cancer treatment even with a low-risk cancer because that patient is at significant risk of cancer progres- sion, by virtue of age. At Karmanos, patients who are diagnosed with prostate or any other type of cancer benefit from a multi-disciplinary team approach, including a medical oncologist, oncologist surgeon, radiation oncoloaist 0 nurse, pharmacist and other pro- fessionals that guide them through the process and determine their best treatment options. Karmanos patient McColl chose surgical removal of the cancer growth on his prostate, with Cher using the robotic da Vinci Surgical System to perform the intricate surgery. The robotic system offers patients a safer, less-invasive pro- cedure, with fewer side effects and less risk of complications, such as impotence and incontinence. "My experience with Dr. Cher and my team at Karmanos was just absolutely phenomenal," McColl said. "I feel alive and I feel lucky that I chose the surgeon and the medical staff and the team that I did. I got a second chance?' 3 , For more information on prostate cancer or other cancer services, call 1(800)KARMANOS.
