A
nswer: Dear Gloria, Ac-
cording to the Centers for
Disease Control, Chronic
Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) afflicts
between 1 and 4 million Ameri-
cans. Well-known CFS suffer-
ers include Laura Hillenbrand,
author of the best-selling book,
Seabiscuit: An American Legend,
and Amy Peterson, three-time
Olympic gold medal speed skater.
Even after 20 years of intensive
research, the cause of CFS
remains largely unknown.
Because the symptoms of
CFS are similar to that
\ of other illnesses (e.g., fi-
bromyalgia and chronic
,
very important that a
proper medical diagno-
sis be obtained.

Given the uncertainties
that surround a diag-
nosis of CFS, the best
nutritional advice is to
eat a very well-balanced diet with
plenty of high anti-oxidant fruits
and vegetables (look for deep,
bright colors). Minimize saturat-
ed fats, refined carbs/sugars, and
caffeine. Avoid alcohol, tobacco,
and unproven herbal remedies.
Exercise appropriately. Your doc-
tor and nutritionist can help.
