Pro-Israel?
Editor Robert Sklar is correct in
his skepticism toward J Street ("J
Street's Winding Way," Sept. 10, page
5). Unfortunately, in addition to the
unassailable facts raised by Mr. Sklar,
there is even stronger evidence dem-
onstrating that J Street's claim to be
pro-Israel is questionable.
J Street will host a conference next
month where one of the speakers
will be Salam Al-Marayati, executive
director of the Muslim Public Affairs
Council. Hours after the horrific
attacks on 9-11, Marayati publicly
stated that Israel should be on the list
of suspects. Marayati has also called
for Israel's destruction. How can J
Street seriously claim to be pro-Israel
when it seeks to elevate such a rabid
anti-Zionist into the mainstream?
One would like to be charitable
and forgiving during this season. Yet
if J Street refuses to look inward and
reconsider its associations with hate-
mongers like Mr. Marayati, how can J
Street's critics ever establish trust in
the organization's claims to be pro-
Israel?

Weather Watcher
Thank you for the cover story profile
of television meteorologist Paul Gross
("Weather Watcher:' Sept. 10, page
11).
I had always seen Mr. Gross as
an unassuming and down-to-earth
individual in his work at WDIV-
TV/Channel 4. But after enjoying the
insight into the man provided by your
article, I have a newfound respect for
the man and his work, both on and
off camera.

Letter writer Isaac Barr, M.D., in
"Obama's Health Folly" (Sept.

and what we have now is de facto
corporate feudalism.
Comprehensive health care only
is available to those who either own
a very profitable business or those
who are of adequate value to a large
corporation. The modern serfs
become captives of their corporate
lords if they have the misfortune of
a pre-existing condition or simply
grow old. Those without the health
and means for private insurance or
without a benevolent employer are
left to die by the insurance company
death committees once they are
drained of all assets or otherwise
deemed unprofitable. Unregulated
corporate consolidation has elimi-
nated any competition that would
serve those who need health care the
most.
I agree that the present bills
authored by Congress (not by
Obama) are folly and that is not
surprising with so much of Congress
on the payroll of trial lawyers or the
health care industry. However, one
of the Constitution's stated purposes
for our government is to provide
for the common defense; and no
conservatives oppose a government-
run military to defend us against an
invasion of Jihadists.
We are not expected to hire
our own for-profit mercenaries.
If our country is under an attack
by slightly smaller invaders, like a
virus, why shouldn't the government
provide for the common defense?
Is the worth of a life measured by
one's profitability to the insurance
industry?
