GOING GREEN from page 87

Subtle changes for quality of liv-
ing included shunning paints, stains
and flooring that had toxic glues or
emitted airborne toxins.
"Most of the things we did would
have a reasonable payoff' down
the road," Keller says. "For exam-
ple, geothermal cooling and heating
systems are expensive to install
but they mean no heating bills, just
electric bills for the pump."
Irving and Barbara Nusbaum
donated the funds to buy the
Donald and Mary Samuels home
in Beverly Hills in 1985. The fam-
ily has been involved with JARC
since its inception and had a rela-
tive served by JARC who died a
couple of years ago while in the
organization's care. "We do it
because it is the right thing to do,"
Rob Nusbaum says.
The Frankel Organization got
involved because company consul-
tant Herman Frankel "heard amaz-
ing things about JARC and Joyce
Keller in particular," says Laurie
Frankel. "They went to lunch and
he said (to me), 'This is a group
we definitely want to get involved
with."
The company knocked down the
house and designed built the new
one well below its costs, Frankel
says.

Helping Hands

Creation of the Minglewood
green home was a commu-
nity affair. In addition to the
Nusbaum family, The Frankel
Organization and United Way,
other organizations and corn-
panies that provided materials
and services were:
The Bill Sloan and Dave Wit-
tenberg Project Green Fund, a
JARC fund to provide energy-
efficient and environmen-
tally-friendly fixtures for JARC
homes.
