T

he weather was picture perfect for
a night of prayer, food and fam-
ily fun at Congregation Shaarey
Zedek in Southfield. More than 200 people
gathered to celebrate Shabbat and savor
one of the final weekends of summer at
a Sept. 4 celebration called "Shabbat Sha-
BANG!"
Staci Giske of Farmington Hills and her
family were among the crowd for the out-
door musical service, barbeque dinner and
games.
"The kids just love it:' said Giske, who
attended with her husband, Fabio, and their children, Ari, 4, Eitan,
2, and Talya, 1. "The children all got tambourines to use and take
home, and all of them came up to the front to dance."

The congregation hosts the informal family service several
times a year with different themes. It's a tradition that began
about nine years ago. The Giske family almost always attends.
"Once they gave out Hawaiian leis; another time there was a
sports theme Staci Giske recalled. "It's a really participatory ser-
vice. Everyone does the blessing over the children together. It's
just a really sweet thing"
The evening was a great opportunity for the families to relax
and play outside. Many of the children bounced on giant inflat-
able playscapes. For most of the kids, it was part of their last
hurrah; the last big weekend of summer before the start of a new
school year.
"The weather was just beautiful," said Tobye Bello of West
Bloomfield, the synagogue's program director. "It was just a fun
evening for families of all ages." I J
