Ilan Ramon's son
Killed In Crash
Jerusalem/JTA The son of the late
Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon was killed
in the crash of an Israeli Air Force fight-
er plane. Capt. Assaf Ramon, 20, died
Sunday while flying the F-16 aircraft as
part of advanced training. He had com-
pleted the training course for pilots with
honors in June, receiving his wings from
President Shimon Peres. He had escaped
death in a training flight in March.
His father, Israel's first astronaut,
was killed aboard the U.S. space shut-
tle Columbia in 2003 when it broke
apart upon its return to earth.
The Air Force ordered all F-16 train-
ing halted until further notice. The
plane crashed in the Hebron Hills.
Ilan Ramon himself was a fighter
pilot in the Air Force and participated
in the 1981 strike on an Iraqi nuclear
reactor.
Assaf Ramon, the oldest of four
children, was 15 when his father died.
He had said he would like to become a
pilot like his father and perhaps even
an astronaut.

Peres Recovers
Jerusalem/JTA
Israeli President
Shimon Peres was released from the
hospital a day after he fainted at a
ceremony in Tel Aviv. Peres, 86, met
with U.S. Middle East envoy George
Mitchell later Sunday.
At the start of the meeting, Mitchell
said: "It is a pleasure to see you so vital,
strong and healthy." Peres responded
with a smile and said, "It is better when
you consider the alternative."
Peres had passed out for a few
moments while speaking in Tel Aviv
Saturday night. He was taken to Tel
HaShomer hospital, where doctors
said he was in good condition. Tests
conducted at the hospital did not
find any problems with Peres' health,
according to reports.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu
wished Peres well at the beginning of
Sunday's Cabinet meeting, saying he
had spoken with him that morning.
"He sounded as excellent as always:'
Netanyahu said. "Of course, it is
impossible to stop Shimon. He spoke
with me about what he plans to tell
envoy Mitchell. I told him that aside
from meeting Mitchell, he should
rest a bit because I believe that every
Israeli is genuinely concerned for our
president. I am certain that I speak
for every member of the government
when I say that we wish him good
health and continued productive activ-
ity on behalf of the State of Israel."

Ethical Food Guidelines
New York/JTA The Conservative
movement has released detailed
guidelines for earning approval from
its ethical food certification initiative.
The guidelines for earning a Magen
Tzedek, or seal of justice, were release
last week, the Forward reported.
The guideline's 175 pages detail
standards in five general areas: treat-
ment of employees, animal welfare,
consumer issues, corporate integrity
and environmental impact.
Among the specific requirements
is that food producers must pay their
lowest-paid employees 115 percent of
the federal minimum wage and provid
those same employees with benefits
equal to at least 35 percent of wages.
The ethical food initiative, which is
run by the Hekhsher Tzedek commis-
sion in coordination with the leader-
ship of the Conservative movement,
was begun by Minnesota Rabbi Mom
Allen in response to revelations of
worker mistreatment at what once was
the nation's largest kosher slaughter-
house in Postville, Iowa.

Pollard's
Release?
Jerusalem/JTA
— A special report
released in Israel
says that convicted
spy Jonathan Pollar
did not receive due
Jonathan
process in America
Pollard
and that successive
Israeli governments worked for his
release.
State Comptroller Micha
Lindenstrauss in his report found
that "Pollard's release from prison in
America was always a consideration
of the Israeli government leaders, an
their actions and the policies they
followed were continuous and consis-
tent during their terms of office."
The report looked at the govern-
ments of Benjamin Netanyahu, Ehud
Barak, Ariel Sharon and Ehud Olmert
during the 24 years that Pollard has
been in prison in the United States
for spying on behalf of Israel.
"The subject was raised in their
meetings and discussions with the
presidents of the U.S.," according to
the report, which noted the fierce
opposition to Pollard's release in
U.S. intelligence on national security
grounds.
The report chastised the govern-
ments for not recording or docu-
menting the content of the meetings,
calling it "a significant failing:'
