dents," Goodwin said. "She also works with
volunteers to determine where they want
to deliver and gives them instructions of
where to go."
Volunteers of the TOV committee,
chaired by Karen Simmons of West
Bloomfield and Judy Kepes of Bloomfield
Hills, plan and implement year- round,
hands-on projects of tikkun olam (repair-
ing the world).
In addition to the Rosh Hashanah gifts,
the volunteers provide Chanukah pack-
ages. "All together, both programs reach
every Jewish senior resident living in a
primarily non-Jewish facility to give them
a taste of the holiday," Goodwin said.
Senior Outreach
The total number of seniors in non-Jewish
facilities is at least 1,000, according to
Rabbi Dovid Polter. Along with Rabbi
A. Irving Schnipper, he serves as Jewish
community chaplain for the JSL Jewish
Community Chaplaincy Program.
The two coordinate and provide pas-
toral care and religious and cultural
programs to Jewish older adults living in
non-Jewish, tri-county facilities.
"The packages program includes
Jewish seniors at facilities like the Park
at Trowbridge in Southfield, which has
approximately 200 Jewish residents, and
the MediLodge of Howell, where just one
Jewish person lives:' Polter said.
As he does during each packages pro-
gram, Polter speaks to the group assem-
bling them.
"I like to let the volunteers know how
much the residents appreciate the packag-
es and share some of the words of appre-
ciation they have told to me throughout
the years.
"The gifts make the residents' faces
beam. They adore the packages and say
they make them feel connected to the
holiday and tradition and to the Jewish
community. The little packages make a big
difference in their lives."
Sills said gift recipients "are always
gracious and receptive. Some are visibly
excited to have the company and know
that others think of them. They are often
curious as to who — what organization
— is responsible for the visit. It is really
heartwarming.
"It is a powerful experience to partici-
pate, invite and educate friends, family
and acquaintances as to the impact just a
few hours can make to better the lives of
others. It is an opportunity for individual
reflection. It reminds us to be grateful
and respectful of life, health, family and
the opportunity to contribute in the com-
ing year." I
