lenses, travel lotions and soaps, honey
sticks, applesauce, challah rolls and a
2009-2010 Jewish holiday calendar.
"Each package has a Rosh Hashanah
card with a picture on it that is personal-
ized by the volunteer who assembles the
package," said Linda Finkel of Bloomfield
Township, event chair for this year's pro-
gram, along with Susie Sills of Bloomfield
Township.
"This year several [Farmington
Hills-based] JARC clients volunteered
at the event, and eight Israelis from our
Partnership 2000 region in the Central
Galilee participated in the program,"
Goodwin said.
"The Israelis are in America for a mif-
gash (encounter) with the 40 Michigan
Birthright participants; a follow-up expe-
rience for the group that participated in
the first Detroit Federation Detroit com-
munity Taglit-Birthright Israel trip this
past summer!'

Assemble And Deliver
The week before the Rosh Hashanah
program, Finkel and Sills called each
facility that would be receiving deliver-
ies to calculate how many packages will
be taken to each one. "Some places have
50 Jewish residents," Finkel said. "One of
them has 88. But we will also go to places
even if they have only one!'
Volunteers — women and a few spouses
— personalize deliveries. "They don't just
leave the packages at the front desk; they
take them to the rooms or apartments
where the residents live," Finkel said. "The
purpose of the project is so they know
they are remembered. A lot of them don't
have family around and we want them to
know we're thinking of them!'
Michelle Sage Chekan, Jewish communi-
ty chaplaincy coordinator for JSL, worked
with staff at each of the 29 delivery sites.
"Michelle works with those facilities in a
variety of projects outside of this program,
and helps coordinate and facilitate this
effort for us in order to reach the resi-
