Bethlehem was once full of Christians but is now largely Muslim. Sharfman returned to West Bloomfield Aug. 19 and felt the Detroit Jewish community should see the mes- sage on the sign. The picture was taken not far from the tomb's entrance. "The walls to the tomb are very high',' Sharfman told the JN. "Its almost like driving in a tunnel with- out a ceiling. You no longer need an escort to go although you do go through a checkpoint. A few soldiers are in the area. And there are lots of people inside davening." She added, "It's interesting that no Israelis are allowed beyond that point, but lots of Arab Palestinians are all over in Israel and no bothers them. They feel safe as they should. Jewish Thought On The Environment "For six years, you shall sow your land and gather in its yield; but the seventh year, you shall let it rest and lie fallow, so that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave the wild animals may eat. You shall do the same with your vineyard, and with your olive orchard." —Exodus 23:10/11 "Finding God in nature" can be a deeply Jewish experience. This isn't some "new age" fad. It's an ancient Jewish practice. Jewish liturgy is infused with descriptions and images of nature as an expression and embodiment of the Divine. Yet for more than a thousand years, Jews — even Judaism itself —have been distant from nature.
