Box Office Stars

The New York Times recently
reported that film studios are
looking hard at the big salaries
paid to stars like Julia Roberts,
Denzel Washington and others.
Audiences will no
longer turn out
for just any movie
with a big star. If
a film is mediocre,
everybody gets on
Facebook, Twitter,
etc., to warn off
their friends.
Radcliffe
The Times noted
that three (Jewish)
actors, who aren't
"huge stars,"
are nevertheless
the stars of this
summer's biggest
grossing films:

Daniel Radcliffe

(Harry Potter
and the Half Blood Prince), Shia
LaBeouf (Transformers 2") and Ed
Asner (who has the main voice role
in the hit Pixar animated film Up).
Asner, 79, must be enjoying his
unlikely moment as box-office
champ. He is so "hot" that the Bio
cable channel just dusted off and

The musician's appearance in
Israel five years ago came at the
invitation of klezmer star Giora
Feidman.
"It was a clarinet festival, and I was
the one jazz guy," says Daniels, who
lives in Santa Fe, N.M., with his wife,
singer Mirabai Daniels. "I had a great
time. Judaism is part of my system.
"My parents were immigrants,
and their concern was having the
best teachers for me. My mother
was from Romania, and my father's
family was from Russia:'
Daniels, whose early career had
him playing at Jewish weddings and
bar mitzvahs and in the orchestra
pit for Broadway shows, doesn't hear
definitive Jewish origins in most of
Benny Goodman's hits.
"The clarinet itself suggests a lit-
tle bit of klezmer," explains Daniels,
who also plays the saxophone and
whose son plays guitar as a hobby. "I
tried to take the klezmer out of jazz
clarinet and make the instrument
sound like something else. I wanted
my own voice:'

It may not be real
history, and reviews
were decidedly
mixed, but Quentin
Tarantino's World
War II action film
Inglourious Basterds
is a runaway No.1
Waltz
box-office hit.
In an interview Tarantino gave
about the film in a recent issue of
the Forward, the director praised
Austrian actor Christoph Waltz,
who plays the evil "Jew-hunting"
officer Hans Landa — and then
dropped a "bio bombshell" regard-
ing Waltz's son.
Tarantino explained that he need-
ed to check on a Yiddish word and
was told that Waltz's son was a rabbi
in Israel and also a Yiddish expert
and that Waltz would query his son
about the word.
The interviewer didn't follow
up and ask if Waltz is Jewish in
real life. My guess, based on avail-
able biography, is that Waltz isn't
Jewish. However, I suspect that
Waltz's ex-wife and the mother of
his children is Jewish. She is an
American from New York. E
