After Beaumont provided
Friedberg with information, he
started the BARRX treatments
in December with surgeon Gary
Chmielewski, M.D. He has had
four treatments, about six weeks
apart, and had his final treatment
last month.
"My colleague, Dr. Chmielewski,
was one of the first to adopt
BARRX radiofrequency ablation
in Southeast Michigan," says Dr.
Cappell. "Today, Beaumont has a
team of nearly one dozen physi-
cians trained in this technology."
Besides having a sore throat
and having to eat mostly liquids
after the first treatment, Friedberg
says the side effects lessened
dramatically afterward.
"I absolutely recommend this,"

GERD is an overwhelming risk
factor for throat cancer in Barrett's
esophagus. It's a common condi-
tion affecting 10-20 percent of
the U.S. population. Of those with
GERD, 10 percent will develop
Barrett's esophagus. People with
Barrett's esophagus are 30-125
times more likely to develop
esophageal cancer than the gen-
eral population.
A recent landmark study pub-
lished in the New England Journal
of Medicine showed radiofre-
quency ablation such as BARRX
was 80 to 90 percent effective at
removing the risk of esophageal
cancer as compared to a 50 per-
cent or lower rate for more tradi-
tional treatments.
Barrett's and possible cancer
included surgery, which required
removing most or all of the esoph-
agus. This new, minimally invasive
option shows great promise,"
says Dr. Cappell.
