Dear
Bar ,
e
heard about
-.....
some recent
__ -4i-
studies that
suggest that
fatty foods, in addition to ad-
versely impacting heart and other
health aspects, may also play
havoc with memory and exercise
ability. Is thattrue? Halli.
A
nswer: Dear Halli, the
New York Times (via a
health blog) and others re-
cently reported on studies involv-
ing laboratory rats conducted by
the Federation of American So-
cieties for Experimental Biology
(FASEB) that suggested that eat-
ing fatty food for only 4 consecu-
tive days impaired the animals'
short-term memory performance
on a maze-memory test. Simi-
larly, rats on the same fatty diet
(5 days) that were trained
to run on a treadmill, per-
_., N. formed significantly worse
(( -.,,'
on the treadmill test than
) the control rats on the
normal diet did.
c
What surprised the re-
searchers was the short
time that it took for the
adverse memory and ex-
ercise effects to appear.
Preliminary indications
from relevant studies
involving humans seem to
suggest that the impact on human
subjects may be similar.
Just another set of reasons to
reduce saturated fats in our diets
and eat more whole grains, fruits,
and vegetables whenever we can.
